a box filled with different types of food

To make your bratwurst meal a remember one, select the appropriate sides to enhance your meal experience. For a simple cookout or family dinner, combine bratwurst with the right dish to complement those flavors and enjoy delightful variety.

  1. Sauerkraut

Sauerkraut which is fermented cabbage can be served in German as a traditional side dish. It is best to accompany with bratwurst sides with a delicious tangy bite, and a crunch. It provides a refreshing contrast that improves the taste of each bite. The probiotics in it maintain a better digestion in the human body.

A homemade sauerkraut dish preparation involves shredding a cabbage and mixing it with salt. Place cabbage into a jar, and cover in its juices. Cover and let ferment at room temperature for up to 1 week and then transfer to refrigerator. Homemade sauerkraut pairs perfectly with bratwurst. Serve it warm or cold according to your preference.

  1. Potato Salad

Potato salad is a timeless favorite that complements bratwurst. You can make multiple variations of potato salads with vinegar-based flavors to the savory bratwurst. Make a potato salad by boiling the potatoes till tender and slice them.

Combine with vinegar, mustard, oil, and a little chopped onion. Add salt, pepper, and fresh herbs for additional flavors. Serve the potato salad warm or at room temperature for the best experience.

  1. Flavorful

Bratwurst is a good meal when combined with Coleslaw. Its crisp texture offers a refreshing contrast to the juicy sausage. According to your taste, customize coleslaw by trying different ingredients.

Combine shredded cabbage and carrots in a large bowl for traditional coleslaw. Then for better presentation, combine apple cider vinegar, sugar, and salt in a separate bowl. Mix the vegetables place them in cold storage for an hour and serve them.

  1. Beans

These Baked Beans are a sweet and savory side that is best for combining with the bratwurst meal. Fry onions until it becomes soft and the bacon is crispy. Then add beans, ketchup, molasses, brown sugar, mustard, and apple cider vinegar. This is one great side dish, especially for outdoor barbecues and family time.

  1. Green Salad

Add a green salad and balance your meal with bratwurst by having a fresh plate of greens. The crispy cooked greens and vegetables provide a perfect balance to the rich sausage.  Use a mix of spinach as the base, and add a variety of vegetables like tomatoes, and cucumbers.

  1. Cheese

Macaroni and cheese are the best side to combine with bratwurst sides. The creamy pasta provides a rich and satisfying contrast to the savory sausage.

For a homemade version, melt butter and whisk in flour to create a roux. Then add milk, and stir until the mixture thickens. Add shredded cheese and stir it until it gets melted and smooth. Combine this sauce with the cooked macaroni, and bake in the oven with a breadcrumb topping for a crunchy finish.
