The History of The Flower Fields: A Carlsbad Tradition in Bloom
Every spring, the rolling hills of Carlsbad burst into a vibrant display of color as millions of ranunculus flowers bloom across 55 acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Today, The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are one of Southern California’s most iconic attractions, drawing visitors from around the world. But the story behind this breathtaking landmark began more than a century ago.
The Early Beginnings
The history of The Flower Fields can be traced back to the early 1920s when horticulturist Luther Gage brought ranunculus seeds to North County San Diego. Gage began cultivating the flowers near South Oceanside, establishing what became known as the Luther Gage Giant Tecolote Ranunculus.
The name “Tecolote” came from the owls that nested on his property. These unique flowers would eventually become one of Carlsbad’s most recognizable symbols.
The Vision of Edwin Frazee
In the 1930s, flower grower Frank Frazee expanded his farming operation and introduced his son, Edwin Frazee, to the art of growing ranunculus. At just 16 years old, Edwin left high school to work full-time in the family flower business.
Over the following decades, Edwin carefully selected and cultivated the most beautiful blooms. Through patient experimentation, he transformed the original single-petal flowers into the spectacular multi-petal ranunculus seen today.
His work produced thirteen vibrant colors, including the famous picotee varieties that create the stunning rainbow effect visitors enjoy every spring.
The Move to Carlsbad Ranch
In 1965, Edwin relocated his flower-growing operation to land owned by the Ecke Family in Carlsbad. The Ecke family, already well known for their poinsettia business, provided the perfect setting for the continued growth of the ranunculus fields.
A close friendship developed between Edwin Frazee and Paul Ecke Jr., both passionate advocates for agriculture and horticulture.
When Edwin retired in 1993, Paul Ecke Jr. encouraged him to remain involved as a consultant and partnered with Mellano & Company to continue cultivating the fields. Recognizing the growing public interest in the flowers, Paul also saw an opportunity to preserve local agriculture through tourism.
Thus, The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch was born.
A Living Legacy
Today, The Flower Fields represent much more than a beautiful seasonal attraction. They serve as a reminder of Carlsbad’s agricultural roots and the vision of the farmers who helped shape the region.
