Carlsbad’s Sister Cities
How One Coastal Community Built Friendships Around the World
As you stroll through Carlsbad Village, it’s easy to admire the beautiful beaches, charming streets, and welcoming atmosphere. But many visitors are surprised to learn that Carlsbad’s story extends far beyond Southern California.
Our city shares lasting friendships with communities halfway around the world through its official Sister City relationships.
These partnerships celebrate history, culture, education, and the idea that communities can learn from one another—no matter how many miles separate them.
They remind us that while Carlsbad may be a small coastal city, its connections are truly global.
If you’re just beginning to explore our community, start with Discover Carlsbad, where you’ll learn how history, culture, and local traditions have shaped the city we know today.
Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic
The City That Inspired Carlsbad’s Name
Carlsbad’s oldest international connection is also its most meaningful.
Our Sister City relationship with Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, was officially established in 1995, but the story actually begins more than a century earlier.
In 1882, Captain John Frazier discovered an artesian mineral spring on his property. Scientific analysis revealed that the water closely resembled the famous healing waters of Karlsbad, Bohemia—now known as Karlovy Vary.
Inspired by this remarkable discovery, the community adopted the name Carlsbad.
It’s one of the few American cities whose name is directly connected to a European spa town.
Today, the Sister City relationship celebrates that shared history while promoting cultural understanding and international friendship.
Visitors can still experience the famous mineral water that inspired our city’s name at Alt Karlsbad, and you can learn more by reading Why Carlsbad Is Named Carlsbad and The History of Carlsbad Mineral Water.
Futtsu, Japan
A Friendship Across the Pacific
Carlsbad’s second Sister City is Futtsu, located in Japan’s Chiba Prefecture.
The relationship was established in 1988 and focuses on cultural understanding, educational opportunities, and strengthening the friendship between the two communities.
Through student exchanges, cultural programs, and community partnerships, residents of both cities have had opportunities to learn about each other’s traditions, customs, and way of life.
It’s a reminder that even communities separated by an ocean can build meaningful and lasting relationships.
Why Sister Cities Matter
Sister City programs are about much more than official agreements.
They’re about bringing people together.
They encourage:
- Cultural exchange
- Educational opportunities
- International friendships
- Economic partnerships
- Mutual respect and understanding
These relationships help broaden perspectives while celebrating what communities have in common.
For Carlsbad, they also reinforce something we’ve believed from the beginning—that great communities are built through connection.
A Community Connected to the World
Carlsbad may be known for its beaches, Flower Fields, and coastal lifestyle, but its influence extends far beyond California.
Our Sister City relationships reflect the welcoming spirit that defines Carlsbad.
A spirit built on curiosity.
Hospitality.
Learning.
And friendship.
Those same values are reflected every day in our local restaurants, public art, community events, and the people who proudly call Carlsbad home.

Cheri’s Reflection
One of the things I find most inspiring about Carlsbad is that our story doesn’t stop at the city limits.
Who would have imagined that a discovery made by Captain John Frazier in 1882 would create a lasting friendship with a beautiful spa city in the Czech Republic? Or that our community would build meaningful cultural connections with Futtsu, Japan?
These relationships remind me that travel isn’t just about seeing new places—it’s about understanding the people, traditions, and stories that connect us.
Every time I share the story of our Sister Cities, I hope guests leave with a deeper appreciation for Carlsbad’s place in the world. Our city may be small, but its friendships, history, and welcoming spirit reach far beyond our coastline.
Carlsbad’s greatest strength has always been its ability to connect people—locally, nationally, and around the world.
