From Bean Fields to Flower Fields
Carlsbad’s agricultural story includes many chapters.
Early bean fields became part of the landscape and local economy.
Avocado groves spread across the hillsides.
Vegetable farms produced tomatoes and other crops.
Flower growers discovered that Carlsbad’s climate was ideal for commercial flower production.
The Frazee family and generations of flower growers helped create what eventually became one of Carlsbad’s most recognizable attractions: The Flower Fields.
The Mellano family built a multigenerational flower-growing business connected to the region’s agricultural history.
Strawberry farming became another visible reminder that agriculture remains part of modern Carlsbad.
Today, visitors can still experience part of this agricultural tradition through flower fields, strawberry farms, lagoons, farmers markets, and local restaurants that celebrate California ingredients.
Remembering the People Who Worked the Land
Agricultural history is not only the story of landowners and successful businesses.
It is also the story of workers.
Mexican and Mexican American laborers played an important role in Southern California agriculture and Carlsbad’s development.
The Carlsbad Barrio became home to generations of families whose work, traditions, businesses, and community relationships became part of the city.
Japanese American farming families also contributed to agriculture in the region, including families whose lives were disrupted by incarceration during World War II.
Preserving agricultural history means telling all of these stories.
The farmers.
The workers.

The entrepreneurs.
And the communities created around the fields.
The land has changed.
Much of the farmland has disappeared.
But agriculture remains part of Carlsbad’s identity.
By remembering the people who cultivated the land, we preserve an essential chapter of Carlsbad’s story.
