Carlsbad Founding Timeline:

1542 – Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, sailing for Spain, claims “California” for the crown.

1602 – Sebastian Vizcaino anchors off Point Loma, and names San Diego Bay.

1769 – Sacred Expedition – First written historical document of Carlsbad by Father Crespi

1798 – Father Lausen established the Mission San Luis Rey de Francia

1821 – Mexico gains independence from Spain

1844 – Rancho San Francisco changes name to Rancho Agua Hedionda

1848 – California becomes part of the United States of America

1860 – Rancho Agua Hedionda changes ownership to Frances Hinton

1870 – Hinton dies, wills Rancho Agua Hedionda to Robert Kelly

1880 – Robert Kelly gives right of way to railroad through Rancho Hedionda coastal land

1881 – John Frazier settles on Government surveyed land north of Rancho Agua Hedionda

Year	Milestone
1881	Captain John A. Frazier purchases oceanfront property south of Buena Vista Lagoon and begins farming.
1883–1885	While drilling for water, Frazier discovers a mineral spring. The water is later found to closely resemble the famous mineral waters of Karlsbad, Bohemia.
1885	The California Southern Railroad stops at Frazier’s Station, introducing travelers to the mineral water and creating new opportunities for the area.
1886	Gerhard Schutte, Samuel Church Smith, D. D. Wadsworth, and Henry Nelson form the Carlsbad Land and Water Company and purchase approximately 400 acres to establish a new town.
1886	The community is renamed Carlsbad after the famous European spa city of Karlsbad (now Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic).
1887	Construction begins on the first homes and businesses, including the Magee House and Gerhard Schutte’s Victorian home, later known as the Twin Inns.
1888	The original Carlsbad Hotel opens, attracting visitors seeking the area’s famous mineral waters and coastal climate.
1890s	Agriculture, tourism, and commerce become the foundation of Carlsbad’s growing economy.
1952	Carlsbad officially incorporates as a city while preserving the legacy established by its early founders.
