St. Michael’s By-the-Sea Carlsbad’s First Church and a Beacon of Faith Since 1894
Long before Carlsbad became a bustling beach town filled with restaurants, boutiques, and visitors, it was a small coastal community where neighbors depended on one another.
As the town began to grow in the late 1800s, its residents wanted more than homes and businesses—they wanted a place to gather, worship, celebrate weddings, comfort grieving families, and build a sense of community.
That dream became reality in 1894 with the construction of St. Michael’s By-the-Sea, the first church in Carlsbad. More than 130 years later, it continues to serve the community and stands as one of the city’s oldest surviving buildings.
The First Church in Carlsbad
St. Michael’s By-the-Sea was established by several of Carlsbad’s early English families during a time when the young village was just beginning to take shape. The original white Gothic Revival chapel was completed in 1894, making it the first—and for many years, the only—church in Carlsbad.
The church quickly became the spiritual heart of the community.
Families gathered here for Sunday worship, baptisms, weddings, Christmas celebrations, and funerals. In many ways, the church witnessed every milestone in the lives of Carlsbad’s earliest residents.
A Traveling Minister
Carlsbad was still a small settlement, so it did not initially have a full-time minister.
The church’s first vicar, The Reverend William E. Jacob, traveled throughout North County by horse and buggy, serving eight Episcopal missions, including Oceanside, Encinitas, Del Mar, Fallbrook, Escondido, Murrieta, San Luis Rey, and Carlsbad. His dedication reflected the pioneering spirit of the era, bringing faith and fellowship to scattered communities across the region.
Moving a Historic Landmark
The original chapel was first built near the corner of Lincoln Street and Oak Avenue, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. In 1959, rather than demolishing the beloved structure, the congregation carefully relocated it to its current site on Carlsbad Boulevard, where it stands alongside a new sanctuary.
Today, St. Michael’s is unique because both the original 1894 chapel and the modern church continue to be used for worship, preserving a direct connection between Carlsbad’s past and present.
A Landmark That Continues to Serve
Although Carlsbad has grown dramatically since the 1890s, St. Michael’s remains an active part of the community.
The campus now includes:
- The historic 1894 chapel
- The modern sanctuary dedicated in 1959
- Boyd Hall and education facilities
- Rose gardens
- Community gathering spaces
The original chapel has been recognized as one of the four oldest buildings in Carlsbad Village and continues to host weddings, funerals, weekday services, and special events.
A Place Where History Lives
Visitors are often drawn to the little white chapel because of its timeless beauty.
Original redwood paneling, oak pews, and a Victorian-era pump organ remain inside, giving guests a glimpse into what church services were like more than a century ago. The chapel has become one of Carlsbad’s most photographed historic buildings and a lasting symbol of the city’s heritage.
If These Walls Could Talk…
“I’ve welcomed generations of Carlsbad families through my doors. I’ve celebrated joyful weddings, comforted grieving hearts, baptized children, and watched this quiet seaside village become a thriving coastal city. Through every season, I’ve remained a place of hope, peace, and community.”
Cherimarie’s Reflection
One of my favorite things about Carlsbad is that history isn’t hidden behind glass—it continues to be lived every day.
St. Michael’s is a perfect example.
Visitors often admire the beautiful white chapel without realizing they’re looking at the very first church built in Carlsbad. Knowing its story changes the way you see it. Instead of simply passing by, you begin to imagine the generations of families who have gathered here for more than 130 years.
Places like this remind us that Carlsbad’s story isn’t just about buildings—it’s about the people whose lives were shaped within them.
