An Old Hollywood Retreat
Where Hollywood Came to Escape
One of the things I love about Carlsbad is that some of its most fascinating stories are tucked away where you’d least expect them.
Hidden among the quiet coastal neighborhoods of South Carlsbad is a remarkable mid-century modern home that has become part of the city’s Old Hollywood lore.
Unlike the grand mansions of Beverly Hills, this home wasn’t about being seen.
It was about getting away.
It offered privacy, ocean breezes, and the slower pace of life that made Carlsbad such an appealing retreat from Hollywood.
A Home Built for Relaxation
The home was originally owned by legendary bandleader Harry James and his wife, actress Betty Grable, one of Hollywood’s biggest stars during the 1940s.
Known for her films, music, and iconic pin-up photographs, Betty Grable was one of the most recognizable celebrities of her generation. Together, she and Harry James found something in Carlsbad that many Hollywood stars were searching for—a peaceful escape from the spotlight.
Years later, the home was owned by Academy Award-winning actor Dustin Hoffman, adding another chapter to its remarkable history.
A Gathering Place for Friends

According to later homeowners, the house became a favorite gathering place where friends from Hollywood would spend quiet weekends away from Los Angeles.
Stories have been passed down that members of the Rat Pack, including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop, visited the home while traveling Southern California.
Whether every visit can be documented or has become part of local legend, the stories reflect Carlsbad’s reputation as a place where famous people could simply relax, enjoy good company, and escape the demands of celebrity life.
A Mid-Century Masterpiece
The home itself feels perfectly suited to that lifestyle.
Its dramatic 15-foot copper entry doors open into a private courtyard, creating the feeling of entering a secluded sanctuary.
At approximately 2,900 square feet, the residence was designed to blur the line between indoors and outdoors. Expansive windows and large glass doors fill the home with natural light and open to lush gardens and outdoor living spaces.
Although it has been thoughtfully updated over the years, the home still retains its original mid-century character while incorporating Balinese-inspired design elements, creating what one owner described as a “globally modern” style.
Once inside the courtyard, the outside world seems to disappear.
The home feels quiet, private, and completely removed from the pace of everyday life.
It’s easy to imagine why it became such an appealing retreat.
Why Carlsbad?
Long before Carlsbad became known for LEGOLAND®, championship golf, and the Flower Fields, it was known for something much simpler.
Fresh ocean air.
Beautiful beaches.
Healing mineral water.
Peace and quiet.
For Hollywood’s biggest stars, that was often the greatest luxury of all.
Carlsbad offered a place where they could spend time with family and friends, enjoy the coastline, and simply be themselves.
A Quiet Chapter in Carlsbad’s Story
Most people drive through South Carlsbad without realizing they’re passing a home connected to Hollywood’s Golden Age.
That’s one of the things I love about this city.
Its history isn’t always announced with a sign or a monument.
Sometimes it’s hidden behind a garden wall, a grove of trees, or a pair of beautiful copper doors.
Those quiet stories are often the ones that make Carlsbad so fascinating.
Cheri’s Reflection
One of the things I’ve learned over the years is that people don’t always come to Carlsbad looking for excitement.
Sometimes they come looking for exactly what Hollywood’s biggest stars were searching for decades ago.
A slower pace.
Fresh ocean air.
A beautiful sunset.
Good food shared with friends.
A place where they can simply relax and enjoy the moment.
Whether you’re a movie star or visiting for the first time, Carlsbad has always offered something that’s difficult to find elsewhere.
A feeling of peace.
And perhaps that’s the greatest luxury our city has ever provided.
