Captain John A. Frazier: The Discovery That Gave Carlsbad Its Name
The Story of Captain John A. Frazier
Every city has an origin story.
For Carlsbad, that story begins with a sea captain, a well, and a remarkable discovery beneath the ground.
In 1882, Captain John A. Frazier was living in the small coastal settlement that would eventually become Carlsbad. Like many early settlers, he needed a reliable source of fresh water.
While drilling a well on his property, Frazier discovered something unexpected—an artesian mineral spring.
The water had a distinctive mineral taste.
According to local history, Captain Frazier suffered from a chronic stomach ailment and began drinking the water. He believed that his health improved and became curious about the unusual mineral water flowing beneath his land.
Frazier sent samples of the water away for analysis.
The results would help change the future of the community.
The mineral composition of the water was found to be remarkably similar to the famous mineral waters of Karlsbad, Bohemia—today known as Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic.
At the time, European mineral spas were popular destinations for travelers seeking relaxation, wellness, and the perceived therapeutic benefits of mineral water.
Suddenly, this small settlement along the Southern California coast had something extraordinary.
It had mineral water that could potentially attract visitors.
And Captain Frazier recognized the opportunity.
Sharing the Water with Railroad Travelers
The arrival of the railroad helped spread the story.
The California Southern Railroad had established a route through the area, bringing passengers along the Southern California coast.
Captain Frazier began offering mineral water to travelers stopping near his property.
Word spread.
Visitors became curious about the mineral spring whose water resembled that of one of Europe’s most famous spa destinations.
People began stopping specifically to taste the water.
The discovery of the mineral spring became one of the earliest tourism stories in Carlsbad’s history.
Long before the beaches, resorts, restaurants, Flower Fields, and LEGOLAND brought visitors to Carlsbad, people were coming here for the mineral water.
The Birth of Carlsbad
Captain Frazier’s discovery attracted the attention of investors and entrepreneurs.
Gerhard Schutte, Samuel Church Smith, and D. D. Wadsworth recognized the potential of developing a community around the mineral spring, railroad, agriculture, and Southern California’s growing population.
Together with other investors, they helped establish the Carlsbad Land and Mineral Water Company.
The company purchased land, developed the townsite, promoted the mineral water, and encouraged people to settle in the new community.
The small railroad stop once associated with Captain Frazier became known as Carlsbad—a name inspired by the famous European spa town of Karlsbad.
The mineral spring had given the community its identity.
From Mineral Water to a Coastal Resort Destination
As interest in the mineral water grew, Carlsbad began developing into an early Southern California health and resort destination.
Hotels were built.
Businesses opened.
Visitors arrived by train.
People came to drink the mineral water, enjoy the mild coastal climate, and experience the growing community.
The Original Carlsbad Hotel and later spa facilities became part of the effort to establish Carlsbad as a destination.
Captain Frazier’s simple search for fresh water had helped set in motion the development of an entire town.
The Mineral Water Story Continues
Carlsbad’s mineral water industry eventually declined.
Economic changes, the Great Depression, and the deterioration of the original wells contributed to the disappearance of the mineral water operation.
For decades, the famous spring remained largely dormant.
But the story was not forgotten.
In the early 1990s, Ludvik Grigoras, a native of Karlovy Vary, became involved in restoring Carlsbad’s mineral water tradition.
The historic well was re-drilled, and the connection between Carlsbad and Karlovy Vary was renewed.
Today, visitors can once again experience Carlsbad’s mineral water and learn about the remarkable discovery that helped give the city its name.
Why Captain Frazier Matters to Carlsbad
Captain John A. Frazier’s story is one of the most important founding stories in Carlsbad history.
Without the discovery of the mineral spring, the development of the community may have followed a very different path.
The mineral water attracted investors.
The railroad brought visitors.
The Carlsbad Land and Mineral Water Company developed the townsite.
Hotels and businesses followed.
And the community eventually became the coastal city we know today.
Captain Frazier did more than discover mineral water.
His discovery helped create the story of Carlsbad.
What to Look for Today
Visitors exploring Carlsbad Village can still experience places connected to this founding story.
The historic mineral well and modern mineral water spa continue the tradition that began with Captain Frazier’s discovery.
Nearby streets and historic sites tell the stories of Gerhard Schutte, Samuel Church Smith, D. D. Wadsworth, the Carlsbad Land and Mineral Water Company, the Original Carlsbad Hotel, and the early development of Carlsbad Village.
Together, these stories form the foundation of Carlsbad’s history.
