Carlsbad’s Name Through Time

The Story Behind a Name

Opening Scene

Have you ever wondered why a Southern California beach town has a name that sounds European?

The answer begins with a spring of mineral water—and a community proud of its identity.

From Frazier’s Station to Carlsbad

Before the mineral spring was discovered, this area was simply a quiet farming community.

After laboratory tests confirmed the water’s remarkable similarity to the famous springs of Karlsbad, the community adopted the name Carlsbad, honoring the European spa city that inspired it.

It was more than a name.

It represented hope, opportunity, and a new future.

The Day Carlsbad Became “Carl”

One of the most unusual chapters came in the early 1900s.

Because another town named Carlsbad, New Mexico, shared the railroad system, officials decided to shorten the California station’s name to simply Carl.

It seemed practical.

The people of Carlsbad disagreed.

Residents believed their community deserved its full name and the history it represented.

After voicing their objections, they successfully convinced the railroad to restore the name Carlsbad.

It’s a wonderful reminder that the people here have always cared deeply about preserving their community’s identity.

A Name That Connects Two Communities

Today, Carlsbad proudly maintains its Sister City relationship with Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, honoring the connection that began with a simple well over 140 years ago.

The name serves as a lasting reminder that one remarkable discovery forever changed the course of this community.

Why This Story Matters

A name is more than a label.

It’s part of a community’s identity.

For Carlsbad, that identity has always been rooted in wellness, hospitality, and the vision of the people who believed this small coastal village could become something extraordinary.

Cheri’s Reflection

I love asking guests if they know how Carlsbad got its name.

Most have no idea.

By the end of the story, they’re often amazed that something as simple as a well could shape the future of an entire city.

It reminds me that history isn’t always made by grand events.

Sometimes it begins with one discovery… and a community willing to dream.
