After laboratory tests confirmed the water’s remarkable similarity to the famous springs of Karlsbad, the community adopted the name Carlsbad, honoring the European spa city that inspired it.
It was more than a name.
It represented hope, opportunity, and a new future.
The Day Carlsbad Became “Carl”
One of the most unusual chapters came in the early 1900s.
Because another town named Carlsbad, New Mexico, shared the railroad system, officials decided to shorten the California station’s name to simply Carl.
It seemed practical.
The people of Carlsbad disagreed.
Residents believed their community deserved its full name and the history it represented.
After voicing their objections, they successfully convinced the railroad to restore the name Carlsbad.
It’s a wonderful reminder that the people here have always cared deeply about preserving their community’s identity.
A Name That Connects Two Communities
Today, Carlsbad proudly maintains its Sister City relationship with Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, honoring the connection that began with a simple well over 140 years ago.
The name serves as a lasting reminder that one remarkable discovery forever changed the course of this community.
