Healing Waters Through the Years

Carlsbad Alkaline Mineral Spa

The Spring That Never Stopped Flowing

Opening Scene

Some stories begin with people.

Others begin with places.

Carlsbad’s story begins with water.

Not just any water.

Water that had spent nearly 9,500 years filtering naturally through layers of ancient rock before reaching the surface beneath Carlsbad.

More Than a Mineral Spring

Since its discovery in 1882, Carlsbad’s artesian mineral water has fascinated visitors.

Naturally rich in minerals and electrolytes, with a pH typically ranging between 8.0 and 9.0, the water became known throughout California for its unique composition.

Scientific testing showed remarkable similarities to the celebrated mineral waters of Karlovy Vary.

That connection gave Carlsbad both its name and its identity.

The Tradition Continues

Although the grand spa hotels are gone, the mineral spring remains part of everyday life.

Visitors can still experience the water today at Alt Karlsbad, where the historic well continues to flow.

Some people fill reusable containers from the outdoor dispensing station.

Others enjoy spa treatments inspired by the city’s wellness heritage.

The water is also bottled at its source and sold locally, allowing visitors to take a little piece of Carlsbad home with them.

A Living Connection

Very few communities can still experience the same natural resource that inspired their founding.

Carlsbad can.

Every gallon reminds us that history isn’t only found in old photographs.

Sometimes it’s still flowing beneath our feet.

Why This Story Matters

The mineral spring isn’t simply a historical landmark.

It is a living connection between Carlsbad’s past and present.

It continues telling the story that began nearly a century and a half ago.

Cheri’s Reflection

Whenever I visit Alt Karlsbad, I’m reminded that the water we’re tasting today is the same water that inspired people to build an entire community around it.

That’s remarkable.

Some traditions disappear.

Others continue flowing, one generation after another.
