Norte Mexican Food & Cocktails | The Montanez Family, Generations of Hospitality, and a Historic Corner of Carlsbad

Outdoor cafe with white chairs, brick floor, and yellow umbrellas.

“One location can hold many generations of stories.”

Some restaurants become landmarks because of their food.

Others become landmarks because of the families who build them, the employees who work there, and the generations of guests who return year after year.

Norte Mexican Food & Cocktails, known for many years as Fidel’s Norte, is one of those places.

The restaurant’s story begins with Fidel and Martha Montanez, continues through their son Richard Montanez, and has become part of the larger culinary history of Carlsbad.

But the story of this location reaches even further back.

Before the restaurant opened, this part of Carlsbad was connected to the Albert Cohn family home and the early development of the seaside community.

Today, Norte brings those stories together: early Carlsbad history, Mexican and Mexican American entrepreneurship, a multigenerational family business, tourism, hospitality, and the timeless tradition of gathering around the table.

The Restaurant Story

Photo

From Solana Beach to Carlsbad

The Montanez family restaurant story began in 1960, when Fidel and Martha Montanez opened their first restaurant in Solana Beach.

At the time, North County San Diego looked very different.

The coastal communities were smaller, tourism was growing, and family-owned restaurants often became important gathering places for both residents and visitors.

Fidel and Martha built their business around Mexican food, hospitality, and the traditions of welcoming people to the table.

Sixteen years later, they expanded north.

In 1976, Fidel’s Norte opened in Carlsbad.

The location was ideal.

Close to the beach.

Near the heart of the growing Village.

Accessible to visitors.

And surrounded by a community that would continue to grow around it.

Over the decades, the restaurant became a familiar Carlsbad gathering place where generations of families celebrated birthdays, shared meals, met friends, and returned year after year.

Meet the Founders

Fidel & Martha Montanez

Behind Norte’s longevity is the story of Fidel and Martha Montanez.

When they opened their first restaurant in 1960, they began a family business that would eventually span multiple generations and become part of North County’s restaurant history.

Their success wasn’t built overnight.

Restaurant ownership requires long hours, perseverance, adaptability, and the ability to create an experience people want to return to.

Fidel and Martha created more than a place to eat.

They created a tradition.

By opening Fidel’s Norte in Carlsbad in 1976, they brought that tradition to another growing coastal community.

Over time, their restaurant became part of Carlsbad’s identity.

Children who once came with their parents returned as adults.

Visitors made Norte part of their vacations.

Locals brought out-of-town guests.

Families celebrated milestones around the same tables year after year.

That is how a restaurant becomes part of a community’s story.

The Next Generation

Richard Montanez & Carrying the Family Legacy Forward

The Montanez family story continued through Richard Montanez, the son of Fidel and Martha and the restaurant’s general manager.

Richard helped carry forward the business his parents began while overseeing a large restaurant operation.

Norte has employed approximately 100 people and can accommodate about 250 guests indoors and another 100 guests on the patio.

That makes Norte more than a longtime restaurant.

It is also a significant employer and one of Carlsbad’s larger community gathering places.

Richard credited the restaurant’s success to its ideal coastal location and longstanding reputation within the community.

That combination has allowed Norte to attract both longtime locals and visitors discovering Carlsbad for the first time.

The restaurant’s longevity demonstrates something every family business understands: preserving a legacy requires balancing tradition with change.

Carlsbad grew.

Tourism expanded.

Dining trends evolved.

New restaurants arrived.

But Norte remained part of the community.

Before Norte

The Albert Cohn Family Home & Early Carlsbad

The story of this area didn’t begin in 1976.

Long before Norte opened, the property was connected to the story of Albert Cohn and his family, who were part of Carlsbad’s early community.

The Cohn family home represents an earlier chapter of Carlsbad.

A smaller seaside settlement.

Fewer buildings.

Unpaved roads.

The arrival of the railroad.

Agricultural fields surrounding the growing community.

Hotels welcoming visitors drawn to Carlsbad’s mineral water and coastal climate.

And families building homes, businesses, and relationships that helped shape the town.

Remembering the Cohn family story adds an important layer to the history of Norte.

The buildings have changed.

The businesses have changed.

But the land continues to hold the stories of the people who lived, worked, and gathered here.

From Family Home to Family Restaurant

A Place Where People Continue to Gather

One of the most meaningful connections between the Cohn family story and the Montanez family story is the idea of gathering.

The Cohn family home was a place of family life during Carlsbad’s early years.

Generations later, the Montanez family created a restaurant where thousands of families would gather.

Birthday celebrations.

Family dinners.

Vacations.

First dates.

Anniversaries.

Meals after the beach.

Visits with relatives.

Different generations.

Different buildings.

Different families.

But the same human need to gather, share food, and create memories.

That connection between past and present is exactly the kind of story we preserve through the Carlsbad Food Tours Storytelling Playbook.

The Food

Mexican Favorites That Became Family Traditions

The menu at Norte reflects the Mexican and Mexican American food traditions that have become an important part of Southern California’s culinary identity.

Guests return for familiar favorites such as tacos, enchiladas, burritos, carnitas, chile rellenos, fajitas, soups, salsa, margaritas, and cocktails.

According to Richard Montanez, some of the restaurant’s most popular menu items have been the chicken dishes.

Norte uses boneless, skinless chicken breasts in its entrées, helping make those dishes longtime customer favorites.

But the food is only part of the reason people return.

They remember their favorite meal.

The table where their family sat.

The margaritas shared with friends.

The birthdays.

The celebrations.

The people.

Over time, those memories become part of a family’s traditions.

More Than a Restaurant

Employment, Tourism & Community

A restaurant that survives for decades becomes woven into the economic and social life of its community.

With approximately 100 employees and seating for hundreds of guests, Norte has played a meaningful role in Carlsbad’s hospitality industry.

Employees have built careers and friendships here.

Visitors have discovered Carlsbad here.

Local families have celebrated milestones here.

Richard Montanez has pointed to the restaurant’s location and longstanding community reputation as important reasons Norte continues to attract both locals and tourists.

Its success reflects the relationship between local businesses and tourism.

Visitors support restaurants.

Restaurants create jobs.

Employees contribute to the community.

And longtime businesses help give a destination its identity.

Taco Tuesday

A Southern California Tradition

Few foods represent Southern California’s casual culinary culture better than the taco.

And few weekly traditions are more recognizable than Taco Tuesday.

Norte’s longtime presence in Carlsbad makes it part of the larger story of Mexican food and taco culture in the Village.

For Carlsbad Food Tours, a Taco Tuesday experience isn’t simply about eating several tacos.

Every restaurant tells a different story.

A different family.

A different approach to food.

A different chapter of Carlsbad.

At Norte, the story is about longevity, family, community, and generations of hospitality.

Why We Love Them

One of the things I love most about Norte is how many layers of Carlsbad can be shared through one location.

The Cohn family connects us to early Carlsbad.

The Montanez family connects us to decades of Mexican and Mexican American entrepreneurship and hospitality in North County.

Richard Montanez represents the next generation carrying a family business forward.

The employees represent the people whose work keeps our local hospitality industry strong.

The guests represent generations of locals and visitors who have made Norte part of their memories.

When we share this story, we’re not simply talking about a restaurant.

We’re talking about the people who helped shape Carlsbad.

Behind the Scenes

How a Restaurant Becomes a Landmark

Restaurants open every year.

Only some survive for decades.

Longevity requires more than a popular menu.

It requires adapting to changing communities while preserving the qualities that made people return in the first place.

Carlsbad changed dramatically after Norte opened in 1976.

The population grew.

Tourism expanded.

The Village evolved.

Dining trends changed.

Competition increased.

But Norte remained.

Over time, the restaurant became part of Carlsbad’s collective memory.

People remember where they celebrated birthdays.

Where they went after the beach.

Where they took visiting relatives.

Where they ordered their favorite margarita.

Those memories become part of a community’s culinary heritage.

If These Tables Could Talk…

“Before tacos and margaritas filled these tables, another family called this corner of Carlsbad home. I’ve watched the Village grow, welcomed generations of families, celebrated birthdays and anniversaries, and seen visitors return year after year. The buildings have changed and the town has grown, but people still come here for the same reason—to gather.”

Cherimarie’s Reflection

One of the reasons I created Carlsbad Food Tours was because I believe food is one of the best ways to tell the story of a community.

You can look at Norte and see a popular Mexican restaurant.

But when you know the story, you see more.

You see Fidel and Martha Montanez opening their first restaurant in 1960.

You see them expanding to Carlsbad in 1976.

You see Richard carrying the family business forward.

You see the employees who have worked there and the generations of guests who have gathered around the tables.

And then you look further back.

You imagine the Albert Cohn family home.

Early Carlsbad.

The railroad.

The hotels.

The farms.

The families who helped build this community.

Suddenly, the history and the food become connected.

That is the story I want our guests to remember.

Then & Now

Then

The area was connected to the Albert Cohn family and the early development of Carlsbad.

In 1960, Fidel and Martha Montanez began their restaurant journey in Solana Beach.

But people still gather here.
