A Journey Through Time

“Every chapter of Carlsbad’s history has helped shape the community we know and love today.”

Before 1882

The First People

For thousands of years, the Kumeyaay and Luiseño peoples lived along this coastline, relying on its lagoons, creeks, and abundant natural resources. Their connection to the land reminds us that Carlsbad’s story began long before the city received its name.

Captain John Frazier dug a well on his property while searching for water. Laboratory testing later revealed that the mineral-rich artesian water closely resembled the famous healing springs of Karlovy Vary (formerly Karlsbad) in what is now the Czech Republic.

A discovery that would forever change the city’s future.
