Carlsbad is known for its beaches, lagoons, restaurants, beautiful neighborhoods, and nearly perfect weather.
But there’s another side of Carlsbad that visitors don’t always see.
It’s a community of people who show up for one another.
They clean beaches.
Protect lagoons.
Feed families.
Deliver meals to older adults.
Help animals.
Mentor children.
Support veterans.
Raise scholarship money.
Volunteer at community events.
Preserve local history.
And sometimes they simply sit with someone who could use a little company.

Protect Our Lagoons
If you love Carlsbad’s natural environment, our lagoons are a wonderful place to begin.
The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation offers an impressive range of volunteer opportunities.
Volunteers can help with trail maintenance and restoration, invasive-species removal, gardening, education programs, events, animal care, indoor projects, and visitor experiences. The organization welcomes a wide range of ages and schedules; volunteers younger than 16 need to participate with a parent or guardian.
This is hands-on environmental stewardship.
You aren’t simply admiring the lagoon.
You’re helping protect it.
Become a Lagoon Steward
One particularly interesting opportunity at Agua Hedionda involves trail restoration and conservation.
Volunteers may participate in native planting, habitat restoration, invasive plant removal, erosion-control projects, trail maintenance, and trash or graffiti removal. The Foundation is also working to remove invasive Algerian sea lavender to help protect the lagoon’s biodiversity.
For someone who enjoys being outdoors, this is a pretty wonderful volunteer office.

Volunteer With Animals
Animal lovers can find opportunities at the Agua Hedionda Discovery Campus as well.
Longer-term volunteers may help care for animal ambassadors, chickens, and even the campus mini pig, while other volunteers help visitors learn about wildlife.
That’s especially appealing for people who want something more regular than a once-a-year service day.
Volunteering becomes part of your routine—and the animals may start recognizing the routine too.
Help Children Learn About Nature
If you enjoy working with children, environmental education provides another opportunity.
Volunteer teacher’s aides at Agua Hedionda help educators prepare outdoor classrooms, distribute materials, and engage children and parents during hands-on environmental programs.
Think about the impact of that.

For me, this is one of the most meaningful kinds of local service.
When you regularly walk somewhere beautiful, volunteering to help protect it feels personal.

Food insecurity exists even in beautiful coastal communities.
That’s easy to forget.
Organizations throughout San Diego County depend on volunteers to sort food, distribute groceries, prepare supplies, assist at food distributions, and support families experiencing difficult times.
Feeding San Diego is one organization where residents can explore current opportunities to help address hunger throughout the region.
You don’t need a special skill to make a difference.
Sometimes what an organization needs most is simply another pair of hands.
Support Meals on Wheels
Another meaningful way to help is supporting older adults through Meals on Wheels San Diego County.
Meals on Wheels isn’t only about delivering food.
The connection matters too.
For an older adult living alone, the person bringing a meal may be one of the few people they see that day.
Local organizations can support the mission in other ways as well.
The Woman’s Club of Carlsbad, for example, supports Meals on Wheels by making cards, tags, brain games, and favors and donating useful everyday items such as toiletries, socks, notepads, pencils, jar openers, pill organizers, playing cards, calendars, and puzzle books.
They’re small things individually.

Woman’s Club of Carlsbad
The Woman’s Club of Carlsbad has been serving the community since 1925.
For women who want to combine volunteering with friendship and social connection, a service organization can be an excellent fit.
Members support a variety of causes, including scholarships, older adults, food assistance, veterans and military families, women and children, animal welfare, and other community needs.
What I particularly like about this model is that you don’t necessarily have to choose just one cause.
You become part of a group that helps wherever help is needed.
Support Veterans & Military Families
Carlsbad’s proximity to Camp Pendleton means military families and veterans are an important part of our North County community.
There are opportunities throughout the region to help veterans transitioning to civilian life, support military families, contribute needed items, mentor veterans, assist with employment programs, or participate in community events.
For people who have served themselves—or families who understand military life—this can be an especially meaningful way to give back.
Help Local Animals
Animal lovers have plenty of opportunities around North County too.
Rancho Coastal Humane Society in nearby Encinitas is one organization worth exploring.
Animal organizations often need help with much more than walking dogs or spending time with cats.
Depending on current needs, volunteers may assist with events, fundraising, administrative work, outreach, foster programs, donation drives, and other support.
And yes, sometimes helping an animal does involve a wagging tail.
That’s not a bad volunteer benefit.

Preserve Carlsbad History
If you’ve been reading our Discover Carlsbad stories, you already know how much history is hiding around us.
The Magee House.
Historic churches.
The old railroad depot.
Early hotels.
Carlsbad’s agricultural heritage.
The Barrio.
Our mineral-water story.
Historic homes.
All of these stories survive because someone cared enough to preserve them.
Organizations involved in local history and preservation may need help with events, archives, research, exhibits, tours, fundraising, and community education.
For history lovers, volunteering can become a way of making sure Carlsbad remembers where it came from.

Not everyone wants a weekly commitment.
That’s perfectly fine.

The Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation, for example, offers group projects that can include trail or exhibit restoration and native-garden projects, as well as opportunities for groups to join scheduled conservation events.
This can be a wonderful alternative to traditional corporate team building.
Instead of spending three hours doing an artificial exercise about teamwork, spend three hours actually working together to improve your community.
You still build the team.
But when you’re finished, something meaningful has been accomplished too.
Teen Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteering is especially valuable for teenagers.
Yes, students may need community-service hours.
But I’d encourage families to look beyond simply checking off the requirement.
Find something the teenager actually cares about.
Animals.
Children.
Sports.
The environment.
Older adults.
Food insecurity.
History.
Libraries.
Veterans.
Once young people discover that their time can make a real difference, volunteering stops feeling like an assignment.
It becomes part of citizenship.
Some organizations have minimum ages or require younger volunteers to participate with an adult, so families should always check current requirements before signing up.
Volunteering in Retirement

Volunteering can play a huge role in that.
When you’ve spent decades working, retirement can create an unexpected question:

At Agua Hedionda, there’s even a social volunteer program called Sunrise Stewards, designed for aging adults and centered around desk-based volunteer projects and social connection.
I love that idea.
Service doesn’t have an age limit.
You Have Skills Someone Needs
People sometimes tell themselves they don’t have anything special to offer.
I don’t believe that.
Can you organize?
Teach?
Cook?
Write?
Take photographs?
Use social media?
Work with spreadsheets?
Garden?
Repair things?
Speak another language?
Plan events?
Talk comfortably with strangers?
Drive?
Read to children?
Make phone calls?
Listen?
Every one of those is a volunteer skill.
Nonprofits don’t only need money.
They need people.
Start Small
If you’re interested in volunteering but aren’t sure where to begin, don’t immediately commit yourself to something every Tuesday for the next five years.
Start with one project.
Attend a beach cleanup.
Help at an event.
Pack food.
Spend a morning working on a lagoon trail.
Join a service club for a meeting.
Try something.
Then ask yourself:
Did I enjoy the work?
Did I connect with the people?
Do I care about this mission?
Would I like to come back?
That’s how you find the right volunteer home.
Volunteering Is Also How You Make Friends
This may be especially important for people who are new to Carlsbad.
Making friends as an adult can be surprisingly difficult.
Volunteering removes some of the awkwardness.
You already have something to talk about because you’re working on something together.
You show up.
You see the same people again.
Someone remembers your name.
Eventually you get coffee afterward.
Then lunch.
Then someone texts you about another event.
Community happens through repetition.
Volunteering gives you a reason to keep showing up.

Service has always been important to me because I believe a community isn’t defined only by its beaches, buildings, restaurants, or beautiful neighborhoods.
It’s defined by what people are willing to do for one another.
I’ve seen that spirit throughout Carlsbad.
Women raising money for scholarships.
People supporting veterans.
Volunteers helping feed families.
Residents protecting our lagoons.
Organizations supporting children.
People helping older adults remain connected and independent.
Businesses donating.
Neighbors showing up.
No single person does everything.
That’s the beauty of it.
We each do something.
And all of those small acts together become the community.
Seat at the Table
You don’t have to start a nonprofit.
You don’t have to write a huge check.
And you don’t need twenty hours a week to make a difference.
Give two hours.
Clean one trail.
Pack one box.
Deliver one meal.
Mentor one student.
Make one card for an older adult.
Walk one shelter dog.
