Mellano & Company | The Family That Helped Preserve Carlsbad’s Flower Fields for Future Generations

Bright orange and yellow flowers with layered petals in a garden.

Every spring, millions of colorful ranunculus flowers transform the hills of Carlsbad into one of Southern California’s most spectacular landscapes.

While visitors often recognize the beauty of The Flower Fields, many don’t realize that preserving this beloved tradition required the dedication of another remarkable farming family.

That family is Mellano & Company.

For nearly a century, the Mellano family has been growing flowers in Southern California. Their partnership with the Ecke family ensured that Carlsbad’s famous Flower Fields would remain a working farm, a major tourist attraction, and a living reminder of the region’s agricultural heritage.

A Family Rooted in Flowers

The story begins in 1925, when Italian immigrant Giovanni Mellano founded Mellano & Company on a small six-acre flower farm in Southern California.

What started as a modest family business steadily grew through hard work, innovation, and a commitment to producing high-quality American-grown flowers. Over the decades, multiple generations of the Mellano family expanded the operation into one of California’s leading flower growers and distributors.

Today, the company grows flowers and foliage on hundreds of acres while supplying florists, wholesalers, retailers, and event professionals throughout the United States.

Helping Save the Flower Fields

Vibrant rows of colorful flowers in a field, including pink, red, orange, yellow, and white.

By the early 1990s, Carlsbad’s famous ranunculus fields faced an uncertain future.

After decades of cultivating the Giant Tecolote Ranunculus, Edwin Frazee was preparing to retire. At the same time, development pressure threatened much of Southern California’s agricultural land.

Recognizing both the cultural and agricultural importance of the Flower Fields, Paul Ecke Jr. partnered with Mellano & Company in 1994 to continue farming the ranunculus fields at Carlsbad Ranch. This partnership preserved the working flower farm while allowing it to evolve into the seasonal attraction enjoyed by visitors today.

Without that decision, one of Carlsbad’s most recognizable landmarks might have disappeared.

Growing More Than Flowers

Although visitors come to admire the breathtaking blooms, the Flower Fields remain first and foremost a working farm.

Mellano & Company serves as the production grower for the ranunculus, carefully planting, cultivating, harvesting, and producing bulbs that are distributed around the world. Their work ensures that each spring the hillsides once again burst into vibrant shades of red, pink, yellow, orange, white, and purple.

The company has also embraced sustainable farming practices, including water conservation, soil stewardship, integrated pest management, and BloomCheck certification, reflecting a long-term commitment to responsible agriculture.

A Living Legacy

Today, The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch® span approximately 55 acres and welcome hundreds of thousands of visitors each spring.

Families stroll among the colorful blooms, photographers capture unforgettable images, schoolchildren learn about agriculture, and visitors from around the world discover one of Carlsbad’s most treasured traditions.

Behind every blossom is the quiet dedication of farming families like the Mellanos, whose work often happens long before the flowers ever bloom.

If These Fields Could Talk…

“Every spring I remind people that beauty takes patience. Long before visitors arrive with cameras, generations of farmers have prepared the soil, planted each bulb, and cared for every bloom. My colors may last only a few weeks, but the dedication behind them has lasted for generations.”

Cherimarie’s Reflection

One of the reasons I love sharing the story of the Flower Fields is because it reminds us that Carlsbad’s greatest treasures didn’t happen by accident.

They were nurtured.

Families like the Frazees, the Eckes, and the Mellanos devoted decades to preserving something beautiful—not just for themselves, but for all of us.

Every spring, when visitors stop to admire the hills covered in flowers, they’re witnessing more than a seasonal display. They’re experiencing a living piece of Carlsbad’s history and the legacy of the people who believed it was worth protecting.
