There is something about a classic car that makes people stop and look.

Or maybe it’s the memories.

A 1957 Chevy can take one person back to high school. A Volkswagen bus might remind someone else of a California road trip. A beautifully restored Mustang can start a conversation between two complete strangers.

Here in Carlsbad, cars fit naturally into our Southern California story.

We have coastal highways made for cruising, beautiful weather, and a community that loves gathering outdoors. Throughout the year, car shows, cruise nights, Cars & Coffee gatherings, and special automotive events give enthusiasts a chance to show off everything from meticulously restored classics to exotic supercars.

And even if you don’t know the difference between a carburetor and a catalytic converter, they’re still fun to see.

Carlsbad Village Street Faire Car Show

One of the best opportunities to combine classic cars with a day in the Village is during the Carlsbad Village Street Faire.

The twice-yearly Street Faire, presented by the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, takes over the Village with hundreds of vendors, food, shopping and entertainment.

A classic car display has traditionally been part of the Street Faire experience, giving visitors another reason to wander through downtown and admire beautifully preserved automobiles.

It makes a fun combination:

Classic cars + Street Faire + Carlsbad Village + the beach.

That’s a pretty good Carlsbad day.

Because details and attractions can change from one Street Faire to the next, check the current event schedule before making a special trip.

Cars & Coffee: Carlsbad Style

One of the most relaxed ways to experience local car culture is through a Cars & Coffee gathering.

The concept is wonderfully simple.

Wake up early.

Drive your favorite car somewhere.

Grab coffee.

Stand around talking about cars.

You’ll find everything from vintage American muscle and European sports cars to modern exotics, custom vehicles and beautifully preserved daily drivers.

There’s usually no need to be a serious collector.

Some people come to show a car.

Some come to photograph them.

Others bring their kids.

And plenty of people simply walk around saying:

“I used to have one of those!”

The Carlsbad Premium Outlets & Automotive Gatherings

The area around Carlsbad’s shopping and commercial districts has also hosted automotive gatherings over the years.

Because informal Cars & Coffee events can move, change schedules, or end altogether, I recommend checking the organizer’s current information before heading out.

That’s especially true with recurring car gatherings. An old online listing can make an event look active long after it has moved somewhere else.

But if you find one happening during your visit, it’s worth stopping by.

This is probably what I enjoy most about car shows.

Every car has a story.

Someone bought that Corvette when they were 22.

Someone spent ten years restoring that truck.

Someone inherited a car from their father.

Someone found an abandoned vehicle in a barn and brought it back to life.

Someone has owned the same Volkswagen for 40 years.

And someone finally bought the Porsche they had wanted since they were a teenager.

Ask an owner about their car and you may get much more than horsepower specifications.

You’ll often get a piece of someone’s life.

That’s storytelling on four wheels.

Southern California’s Love Affair With Cars

Car shows also connect to a much larger Southern California story.

For generations, cars have helped define life here.

Drive-ins.

Surf wagons.

Hot rods.

Lowriders.

Woodies.

Volkswagen buses.

Convertibles.

Muscle cars.

Cruising Highway 101.

Southern California helped turn the automobile into something beyond transportation.

Cars became part of the culture.

And our coastline provided the perfect backdrop.

Few cars represent California beach culture better than the classic woodie wagon.

Long before modern SUVs became standard beach transportation, surfers needed vehicles capable of carrying long surfboards.

Part of the fun is never knowing exactly what will turn up.

You might see a pristine 1930s coupe parked next to a 1960s muscle car.

Then a Corvette.

A vintage Porsche.

An old pickup.

A Volkswagen bus.

A lowrider.

A custom hot rod.

A modern Ferrari.

Or something so unusual that everyone gathers around trying to figure out what it is.

Look closely.

The details are often incredible.

Engines polished until they shine.

Perfect upholstery.

Hand-painted pinstriping.

Period-correct wheels.

Vintage license plates.

And chrome polished so brightly you can see yourself in it.

Talk to the Owners

If you see the owner standing near a car you love, ask about it.

Most enthusiasts are happy to tell you the story.

Try:

“How long have you had it?”

That one question can open the door to an entire conversation.

You may learn where the car came from, how much work went into restoring it, what parts were difficult to find, or why that particular model means so much to its owner.

You don’t need to know anything about cars.

Just be curious.

Car Shows Are Great Family Activities

Car shows can also be surprisingly good outings with children.

Kids don’t need to understand engine displacement to appreciate a bright red sports car.

Let them pick their favorite.

Take pictures.

Look for the oldest car.

Find the strangest one.

Ask which car they would drive if they could choose anything.

And teach them an important rule early:

Look, but don’t touch unless the owner says it’s okay.

For someone who spent years restoring a car, an enthusiastic little handprint isn’t necessarily the souvenir they were hoping to take home.

Photographing Classic Cars

Car shows are wonderful places for photography.

Try photographing details instead of only taking pictures of entire vehicles.

A hood ornament.

Chrome.

An old steering wheel.

A vintage emblem.

Whitewall tires.

A dashboard.

A reflection in a polished fender.

If the show is near the coast, you may even be able to position yourself so palm trees or the Pacific appear behind the car.

Suddenly you’ve created the perfect Southern California image.

Cars, Food & Carlsbad Village

Naturally, I’m going to suggest adding food to the experience.

If you’re attending a car show or Street Faire in Carlsbad Village, don’t leave as soon as you’ve finished looking at the cars.

Stay awhile.

Have breakfast.

Grab coffee.

Walk through the Village.

Visit local shops.

Have lunch.

Walk to the beach.

Or come back later for dinner.

That’s what I love about events in downtown Carlsbad.

One activity can easily turn into an entire day.

Make It a Guys’ Day in Carlsbad

We’ve already talked about Guys’ Weekend in Carlsbad, and a car show fits perfectly into that itinerary.

Start with breakfast.

Check out the cars.

Grab lunch or a local craft beer.

Head toward the beach.

Maybe finish with dinner in the Village.

Of course, plenty of women are serious car enthusiasts too—so perhaps we should simply call this one:

A really good Carlsbad day.

More Than a Car Show

The best community car events aren’t really about automobiles alone.

They’re gathering places.

People meet neighbors.

Parents bring children.

Collectors exchange information.

Older generations share stories with younger ones.

Local businesses benefit from additional visitors.

People walk around outside instead of sitting at home.

And someone inevitably finds the exact car they owned 40 years ago.

That’s when you hear:

“I should never have sold that car.”

Every car show has at least one.

I think car shows fit into the Carlsbad story for the same reason I enjoy writing about historic buildings, restaurants and longtime local businesses.

They preserve stories.

Restoring an old automobile is really an act of preservation.

Someone decided this object mattered enough to save.

They searched for parts.

Fixed what was broken.

Preserved what was original.

And brought a piece of another era back into the present.

Then they parked it somewhere for the rest of us to enjoy.

That’s pretty special.

And when you put those cars beneath the palm trees and California sunshine, they seem right at home.

Seat at the Table

Carlsbad’s history isn’t preserved only inside museums.

Sometimes it’s parked along the curb.

It’s a vintage woodie that reminds us of California surf culture.

A convertible that recalls road trips along Highway 101.

A muscle car that brings someone back to high school.

A truck that belonged to someone’s grandfather.

Every vehicle has traveled a different road to get here.

And every owner has a story to tell.

So next time you see a row of classic cars parked in Carlsbad, don’t simply walk past.
