The Story Behind Blue Ocean
Blue Ocean was created by the owners of the well-known Love Boat Sushi restaurants, who envisioned a more sophisticated Japanese dining concept for Carlsbad Village. Their goal was to move beyond the traditional neighborhood sushi restaurant by creating a space where fresh sushi, robata grilling, creative small plates, and craft cocktails could all be enjoyed in a stylish yet welcoming atmosphere.
Located at 2958 Madison Street, the restaurant transformed the former Chin’s Szechwan Cuisine location into a sleek, contemporary dining room inspired by the ocean, complete with natural wood, modern lighting, and an open sushi bar.
What Is Robata?
While sushi may be the restaurant’s biggest draw, the word “Robata” is equally important.
Robata (short for robatayaki) is a traditional Japanese style of grilling over binchotan charcoal, prized for its clean burn and ability to cook food at consistent temperatures. Historically, Japanese fishermen used enclosed charcoal to prepare meals while at sea. Today, the technique is celebrated for bringing out the natural flavors of seafood, meats, and vegetables.
