Bringing a Taste of France to the Heart of Carlsbad Village

Nestled in the heart of Carlsbad Village, Froglanders Crêpes & Yogurt has become a favorite destination for locals and visitors looking for a taste of France without leaving the California coast.

A Family Legacy That Spans Three Countries
Every restaurant has a story.
Froglanders’ story begins long before Carlsbad.
It begins in Yazd, Iran, one of the oldest centers of the Zoroastrian faith, where Dinyar Khosraviani was born in 1934. Growing up in a culture that values kindness, generosity, hospitality, and service to others, Dinyar learned lessons that would guide his entire life.
Seeking new opportunities, he immigrated to Canada, where he spent fifteen years managing a Shell service station. Most people would have considered retirement after such a successful career.
Not Dinyar.
Looking for sunshine and a new adventure, he moved to Southern California and purchased the beloved Froglanders in La Jolla.
What started as another chapter in life quickly became his passion.
A Beautiful Blend of Cultures
At first glance, it may seem unusual that an Iranian family would own a French crêperie.
In reality, the connection is beautifully natural.
For generations, French cuisine has influenced Persian dining, particularly cafés, pastries, desserts, and elegant culinary traditions. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, French culinary techniques became woven into Iranian culture, especially in bakeries, cafés, and hospitality.
Both cultures also share something even deeper.
They believe meals should be enjoyed—not rushed.
Food should bring families together.
Hospitality should make every guest feel welcome.
Those shared values are exactly what guests experience at Froglanders today.
The Restaurant Story
Bringing France to Carlsbad
Founded in 1986, Froglanders introduced Southern Californians to authentic French crêpes long before they became widely popular.
Originating in the Brittany region of France, crêpes have been enjoyed for centuries as both savory meals and sweet desserts.
Every crêpe at Froglanders is still made fresh to order, using simple ingredients transformed through careful technique and craftsmanship.
Whether filled with savory chicken and cheese or strawberries and Nutella, each crêpe reflects the timeless tradition of French café culture.
A Philosophy of Happiness
Although Dinyar embraced French cuisine, his greatest contribution wasn’t found on the menu.
It was found in the way he treated people.
He often reminded guests:
“Only happy people come here. Everyone has a smile.”
To Dinyar, Froglanders wasn’t simply a frozen yogurt or crêpe shop.
It was a place where families celebrated birthdays.
Children laughed over frozen yogurt.
Friends gathered after school.
Visitors discovered something new.
His philosophy shaped the restaurant’s culture and continues to define it today.
Carrying the Legacy Forward
Following Dinyar’s passing, his son Shah Khosraviani proudly carried the family tradition forward.
Today, Shah owns and operates the Carlsbad Village location, continuing the values his father lived every day.
Warm hospitality.
Fresh food.
Family.
Community.
Under Shah’s leadership, Froglanders has expanded beyond its original roots while remaining true to the principles that made the business so beloved.
Whether guests order a savory French crêpe, frozen yogurt, a smoothie, or one of the restaurant’s vegan or gluten-free offerings, they experience the same welcoming spirit that Dinyar believed every customer deserved.

Behind the Scenes
The Art of the Perfect Crêpe

Making an exceptional crêpe is both simple and surprisingly precise.
The batter must be smooth.
The temperature must be just right.
The crêpe must be thin enough to remain delicate while still holding its fillings.
Every order is prepared individually, allowing guests to enjoy a meal that’s made especially for them.
It’s a wonderful reminder that craftsmanship often lives in the smallest details.
Why We Love Them
One of the reasons I love bringing guests to Froglanders is because it represents everything Carlsbad Food Tours is about.
It’s a wonderful example of cultures coming together.
French culinary traditions.
Persian hospitality.
California sunshine.
Carlsbad community.
Every guest enjoys a delicious crêpe.
But they also experience a family story built on resilience, generosity, and genuine kindness.
That’s what makes Froglanders so memorable.
If These Tables Could Talk…
“I’ve welcomed travelers longing for a taste of Europe, children enjoying their very first crêpe, couples sharing dessert after dinner, and families discovering that the simplest foods often create the sweetest memories.”
Cherimarie’s Reflection
One of my favorite moments at Froglanders is watching guests discover how satisfying a simple crêpe can be.
Many expect dessert.
Instead, they’re surprised by a savory French classic that feels both elegant and comforting.
It’s another reminder that one of the joys of Carlsbad Food Tours is introducing people to foods they may never have tried on their own.
By the end of the tour, they’ve not only enjoyed wonderful restaurants—they’ve traveled around the world without ever leaving Carlsbad Village.

The story of Froglanders reminds us that great restaurants often tell much bigger stories.
