Park 101 | Where Food, Fun, and Community Come Together in Carlsbad Village
“Some restaurants are places where you eat. Others become places where the community gathers.”
In the heart of Carlsbad Village, just a few blocks from the Pacific Ocean, Park 101 has created something that feels perfectly suited to the Carlsbad lifestyle.
Part restaurant.
Part barbecue joint.
Part rooftop bar.
Part beer garden.
And entirely designed around bringing people together.
Since opening in July 2017, Park 101 has become one of Carlsbad Village’s most recognizable gathering places. The expansive 8,000-square-foot open-air dining and drinking hub offers visitors and locals a casual place to enjoy barbecue, burgers, tacos, craft beer, cocktails, live entertainment, and time with friends and family.
Park 101 captures something important about Carlsbad.
We love great food.
We love being outdoors.
We love gathering with friends.
And we rarely need an excuse to enjoy another beautiful day near the coast.
For guests exploring Carlsbad Village, Park 101 offers a relaxed introduction to the social, outdoor lifestyle that makes our community special.
Meet the Owners
Peter Cich, Doug Sondomowicz & Rob McShea
Behind Park 101 are Southern California restaurateurs Peter Cich, Doug Sondomowicz, and Rob McShea, who co-own and manage the popular Carlsbad Village destination.
Together, they envisioned something larger than a traditional restaurant.
They wanted to create a flexible gathering place where different people could enjoy the space in different ways.
Families could stop for lunch.
Friends could meet for drinks.
Visitors could relax after spending the day at the beach.
Groups could celebrate birthdays and special occasions.
Sports fans could gather to watch a game.
And guests could enjoy Carlsbad’s beautiful weather in an open-air environment.
That vision became Park 101.
Rather than asking every guest to have the same experience, the concept gives people the freedom to create their own.
Grab something to eat.
Order a drink.
Find a table.
Head upstairs.
Meet some friends.
Stay awhile.
The owners created a destination that reflects the relaxed and social personality of Carlsbad itself.
The Park 101 Story
Creating Carlsbad’s Community Backyard
When Park 101 opened in July 2017, its size and concept immediately made it stand out.
At approximately 8,000 square feet, the open-air venue was designed as a multi-level food and entertainment destination rather than a traditional sit-down restaurant.
Different areas of the property create different experiences.
Guests can enjoy casual dining.
Gather around shared tables.
Relax outdoors.
Explore the beverage offerings.
Enjoy views from the rooftop.
Listen to music and entertainment.
Or simply spend time with friends.
The result feels less like visiting a restaurant and more like spending the afternoon in a giant neighborhood backyard.
And that’s part of Park 101’s appeal.
It’s casual.
Flexible.
Social.
And unmistakably Southern California.
A Food Hall Before Food Halls Were Everywhere
Park 101 reflects a larger change in how people want to dine.
Guests increasingly enjoy spaces where groups can gather without everyone having to order the same kind of meal or participate in a formal dining experience.
Park 101 embraced that idea by combining food, beverages, entertainment, and outdoor gathering spaces into one destination.
You can stop in for lunch.
Stay for a beer.
Meet friends later.
Watch the sunset.
Listen to music.
And suddenly realize you’ve spent half the day there.
The experience is built around freedom.
Come as you are.
Stay as long as you like.
Enjoy Carlsbad.
The Food
Casual California Favorites
The food at Park 101 reflects the relaxed personality of the venue.
The menu focuses on approachable dishes designed for sharing, casual dining, and enjoying with friends.
Guests may discover favorites such as:
- Barbecue meats
- Burgers
- Sandwiches
- Tacos
- Salads
- Shareable appetizers
- Seasonal specials
- Desserts
One of the things that makes Park 101 work so well is its flexibility.
You can stop for a quick bite.
Enjoy a full meal.
Share food with friends.
Or simply order something to enjoy alongside a local craft beer or cocktail.
The Beverage Experience
Craft Beer, Cocktails & Coastal Gatherings
Carlsbad is part of one of the most celebrated craft beer regions in the United States.
Park 101 embraces that culture through a beverage program featuring craft beer, cocktails, and other rotating selections.
The relaxed open-air environment makes it a natural place to gather over drinks.
After work.
After the beach.
Before dinner.
During a game.
Or simply because the sun is shining.
At Park 101, the beverage experience is part of the larger social atmosphere.
The drinks bring people to the table.
The conversations keep them there.
Behind the Scenes
Designing a Place for Everyone
One of the most interesting things about Park 101 is the variety of people who use the space.
Families.
Couples.
Groups of friends.
Tourists.
Locals.
Sports fans.
Dog owners.
Corporate groups.
Celebrations.
Creating a venue that feels welcoming to so many different guests requires thoughtful design and hospitality.
The open-air concept allows guests to move through the space and create their own experience.
Some people stay for twenty minutes.
Others stay for hours.
Some come for the food.
Others come for the drinks.
Many come because they know they’ll probably run into someone they know.
That’s when a restaurant becomes something more.
It becomes part of the community.
Why We Love Them
One of the things I love about Park 101 is how naturally it fits into the Carlsbad lifestyle.
Carlsbad isn’t a formal place.
We’re a beach community.
People come straight from the ocean.
Families bring their children.
Friends gather after work.
Visitors walk through the Village in flip-flops.
Park 101 welcomes all of them.
It gives people permission to relax.
There’s no pressure to rush through a meal.
No need for an elaborate plan.
You can simply show up, find something good to eat, enjoy a drink, and spend time with people you care about.
That’s a very Carlsbad way to spend an afternoon.
Park 101 & Carlsbad Food Tours

Park 101 has also been part of the culinary experiences we share through Carlsbad Food Tours.
Its casual atmosphere and approachable food make it a fun stop for groups exploring the Village.
Guests aren’t simply tasting another dish.
They’re experiencing a different style of Carlsbad hospitality.
Every tasting location tells a different part of our community’s culinary story.
Some restaurants preserve family recipes.
Some introduce cuisines from around the world.
Some showcase fine dining.
And places like Park 101 demonstrate the importance of gathering spaces.
Because communities need places where people can simply come together.
A Party on the Move
Park 101 fits naturally into one of the ideas we often use to describe Carlsbad Food Tours:
A Party on the Move.
Guests walk through Carlsbad Village.
They taste different foods.
Meet restaurant owners.
Learn local stories.
Discover hidden gems.
And enjoy the experience together.
Park 101 captures that same energy.
Food.
Drinks.
Music.
Friends.
Sunshine.
Conversation.
It’s not only about what’s being served.
It’s about how people feel while they’re there.
If These Tables Could Talk…
“I’ve welcomed families fresh from the beach, friends celebrating birthdays, sports fans cheering together, visitors discovering Carlsbad, dogs sleeping beneath picnic tables, and locals who stopped for one drink and stayed all afternoon. I’ve heard music, laughter, celebrations, and thousands of conversations. Somewhere along the way, I became part of the neighborhood.”
Cherimarie’s Reflection
One of the things I’ve learned through Carlsbad Food Tours is that every community needs gathering places.
Restaurants are important because of the food they serve.
But they’re also important because of the connections they create.
Park 101 gives people space to gather.
You can arrive with your family.
Meet friends.
Bring a group.
Celebrate something.
Or simply enjoy another beautiful afternoon in Carlsbad.
When we introduce guests to places like Park 101, we’re showing them another part of what makes our community special.
Carlsbad isn’t only something you see.
It’s something you experience.
And often, the best experiences happen when you’re sitting around a table with other people.
Then & Now
Then
Carlsbad’s earliest gathering places included hotels, general stores, restaurants, train depots, and community halls where residents exchanged news, shared meals, and built relationships.
Now
Modern gathering places like Park 101 continue that tradition in a distinctly Southern California way.
Open-air dining.
Craft beer.
Casual food.
Music.
Community events.
Friends.
Families.
Visitors.
The surroundings may have changed.
But the need to gather hasn’t.

A Seat at the Table
If you could gather your favorite people around one big table at Park 101, who would you invite—and what would you celebrate?
Some of the best moments in life don’t require an invitation.

Good food.

Our Legacy
Park 101 represents the modern evolution of Carlsbad’s community gathering places.
Through the vision of Peter Cich, Doug Sondomowicz, and Rob McShea, an 8,000-square-foot space in Carlsbad Village became a destination where food, drinks, entertainment, and community come together.
Its story reflects the relaxed coastal culture that defines Carlsbad.
People come as they are.
They stay longer than they planned.
They meet friends.
They celebrate milestones.
They create memories.
And they become part of the community.
Because the most successful gathering places aren’t simply measured by the food they serve or the drinks they pour.
They’re measured by the connections created around their tables.
