The History of Calavera Hills
The name Calavera, Spanish for “skull,” is believed to have originated from early Spanish explorers who reportedly discovered Native American remains in the area centuries ago.
The centerpiece of the neighborhood is Mount Calavera, one of the few volcanic plugs found along the Southern California coastline. Formed millions of years ago through volcanic activity, this unique geological landmark has become one of Carlsbad’s most recognizable natural features.
As Carlsbad expanded during the late twentieth century, much of the surrounding land was carefully preserved as open space, allowing residents to enjoy one of the city’s largest networks of hiking and biking trails.
Today, Calavera Hills perfectly balances residential living with environmental conservation.

One of my favorite things about this neighborhood is that every hike offers a different perspective. Some days it’s the panoramic views from Mount Calavera. Other days it’s spotting wildflowers after winter rains or simply enjoying the quiet that comes with being outdoors.
