Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant
New Mexican family recipes and more than six decades of Carlsbad hospitality
“A family restaurant becomes a landmark when its recipes and welcome are passed from one generation to the next.”
Meet the People Behind the Restaurant
Abel and Ophelia Garcia opened Garcia’s Mexican Restaurant beside their State Street barbershop in 1960. Their granddaughter Belynn R. Gonzales began helping in the restaurant as a child and took the helm on July 1, 1979. Longtime general manager Jose L. Payo, originally from Oaxaca, joined in 1984 and helped the family expand its restaurant and catering work. Public materials emphasize the family kitchen rather than a separate executive-chef identity.
The Story Behind the Dream
Garcia’s grew from Ophelia’s New Mexican heritage and the family’s belief in food made from scratch. Enchiladas, burritos, tamales, and other familiar dishes carry the comfort of home cooking. The restaurant also represents continuity: while State Street evolved into a major dining corridor, Garcia’s preserved a quieter, family-centered kind of hospitality.
Signature Offerings

Behind the Scenes
Garcia’s longevity is built on repetition done with care: preparing food in-house, protecting established recipes, welcoming returning families, and teaching each generation what the restaurant stands for.
Why We Love Them
Garcia’s connects Carlsbad’s present-day culinary scene to the families who built the Village’s earliest gathering places. Its history is inseparable from State Street and from the community it has served since 1960.
Cherimarie’s Reflection
When I bring guests to a family restaurant like Garcia’s, I am sharing more than a meal. I am introducing them to the people, recipes, and everyday perseverance that give Carlsbad its soul.
