One of Carlsbad’s Most Endearing Local Legends

As we stand here in Carlsbad Village, your eyes are naturally drawn across the street to the colorful mural featuring a pig riding a surfboard.

It’s impossible not to smile.

And almost every guest asks the same question.

“What does a surfing pig have to do with Carlsbad?”

I wondered the very same thing the first time I heard the story.

Like so many great small-town tales, it begins with a little imagination, a colorful character, and a story that’s been shared from one generation to the next.

Meet Ralph

Long before Carlsbad Village became the lively downtown we enjoy today, this area looked very different.

The historic Twin Inns wasn’t just famous for its legendary family-style chicken dinners.

The property also included a small farm with chickens, gardens…and one unforgettable pig.

His name, according to local lore, was Ralph Nader.

Ralph wasn’t content staying inside his pen.

He had a habit of escaping and wandering across the street, where today’s liquor store now stands.

Before long, everyone in the neighborhood knew exactly where Ralph liked to spend his time.

How “Pig Liquor” Got Its Name

As Ralph continued making his daily adventures across the street, locals began jokingly referring to the liquor store as “Pig Liquor.”

The nickname caught on.

And like many great hometown stories, it simply refused to disappear.

For years, pig statues stood outside the store as a playful tribute to the famous wandering pig.

Even today, longtime employees and local residents are often happy to share Ralph’s story with anyone curious enough to ask.

Whether every detail happened exactly as remembered—or whether the story has grown a little more colorful with each telling—is almost beside the point.

The legend has become part of Carlsbad’s identity.

A Surfing Pig?

So why is Ralph riding a surfboard?

Because this is Carlsbad.

Around here, even our local legends eventually learn to surf.

More than a century ago, this same corner was home to chickens, gardens, and one adventurous pig who apparently preferred visiting the neighbors.

It’s hard to imagine now.

But stories like Ralph’s help us remember that Carlsbad wasn’t always the vibrant beach village we know today.

It grew one family, one farm, one business, and one unforgettable story at a time.

One of the reasons I love telling Ralph’s story is because it reminds us that history doesn’t always have to be serious.

Sometimes it’s the funny stories that become the most memorable.

Whether Ralph really crossed the street every day or whether the legend has grown over the years almost doesn’t matter anymore.

Children laugh when they see the surfing pig.
