Places I Take Visiting Friends in Carlsbad
Whenever friends come to visit, I want them to experience the Carlsbad I love—not simply the popular attractions, but the places that reveal our relaxed coastal lifestyle, natural beauty and welcoming community.
These are some of the places and experiences I enjoy sharing most.
Breakfast at The Village Pie Shop or Cafe Topes
A wonderful Carlsbad day should begin with breakfast, and The Village Pie Shop or Cafe Topes are both charming and delicious places to start.
Located in Carlsbad Village, it has the warm atmosphere of a neighborhood café. We can enjoy breakfast, coffee and something sweet while deciding where the day will take us.
It is comfortable, friendly and feels like the kind of place locals return to again and again.
Explore Carlsbad Village
After breakfast, I enjoy walking through Carlsbad Village with my guests.
The Village has historic buildings, colorful murals, locally owned boutiques, restaurants and inviting outdoor cafés—all within walking distance of the beach.
I point out places connected to Carlsbad’s history, including the historic railroad depot, Twin Inns, Magee House and the mineral-water story that gave our city its name.
Of course, one of my favorite ways to introduce friends to the Village is through Carlsbad Food Tours. Sharing the food, history and stories of our community allows visitors to experience Carlsbad through the eyes of a local.
Spend Time at the Beach
No visit to Carlsbad feels complete without time at the beach.
Sometimes we take a peaceful morning walk along the shoreline. Other times, we find a place to sit, listen to the waves and watch surfers riding along the coast.
Carlsbad’s beaches are beautiful without feeling overly formal or complicated. You can walk, relax, explore the tide pools or simply enjoy the ocean breeze.
It is often the simplest part of the day—and one of the most memorable.
Paddleboard on Agua Hedionda Lagoon
For friends who enjoy being active, I like taking them paddleboarding on Agua Hedionda Lagoon.
The calm water makes it an inviting place to paddle while enjoying views of the surrounding hills and shoreline. It offers a different side of Carlsbad—peaceful, scenic and connected to nature.
Whether we paddle for an hour or simply relax near the water, the lagoon always feels like a little escape.
Ride E-Bikes Along the Coast
An e-bike ride along the coast is one of the most enjoyable ways to experience Carlsbad.
We can ride beside the ocean, feel the coastal breeze and stop whenever a beautiful view catches our attention. The ride toward South Carlsbad State Beach is especially scenic.
E-bikes allow us to cover more ground without rushing. We can enjoy the beaches, coastal neighborhoods and overlooks while still having time to stop for photographs or watch the sunset.
Dinner With an Ocean View
After a day of exploring, I like ending with dinner somewhere overlooking the ocean.
Good food always tastes better when it comes with a beautiful coastal view, especially when the sun begins to set over the Pacific.
Vigilucci’s Seafood & Steakhouse has one of the best views of the sunset in Carlsbad.
It gives everyone time to relax, talk about the day and enjoy the easygoing atmosphere that makes Carlsbad so special.
Sharing My Carlsbad
When friends visit, I do not feel the need to create an overly complicated itinerary.
A memorable Carlsbad day can be as simple as breakfast in the Village, a walk on the beach, paddleboarding at the lagoon, an e-bike ride along the coast and dinner with an ocean view.
These are more than places I recommend. They are pieces of the life I love here.
Sharing them with visiting friends allows me to experience Carlsbad all over again—and reminds me how fortunate I am to call this beautiful coastal community home.
