“Where should we eat while we’re in Carlsbad?”

Nick’s on State: The Restaurant I Recommend to Almost Everyone
Nick’s Restaurants is one of those places that’s easy to recommend.
Located right in Carlsbad Village, Nick’s combines polished service with a relaxed Southern California atmosphere. It’s upscale enough for a special occasion without feeling overly formal.
I especially like recommending Nick’s to visitors who want a nice dinner after spending the day exploring the Village. You can walk around, shop, visit the beach, and then settle in for dinner without ever needing to move the car.

Cicciotti’s: Italian Food with a Carlsbad Story
Cicciotti’s Trattoria Italiana & Seafood has long been one of the restaurants I enjoy sharing with visitors.
There’s something about Italian food that naturally brings people together around the table, and Cicciotti’s captures that feeling beautifully.
Pasta, seafood, pizza, wine, conversation—it feels comfortable and welcoming.

When Campfire opened, it helped show people outside our community that something exciting was happening in Carlsbad dining.
The concept revolves around gathering around a fire, and you can feel that inspiration throughout the restaurant—from the design to the cooking.
There’s an energy here that’s difficult to describe until you experience it.
Why I recommend it: Creative wood-fired cooking, a distinctive atmosphere, and an important place in Carlsbad’s culinary evolution.

Jeune et Jolie: For a Truly Special Evening
Just down the street from Campfire is Jeune et Jolie, one of the restaurants that helped put Carlsbad firmly on the culinary map.
French-inspired and elegant without losing its Southern California personality, Jeune et Jolie offers the kind of dining experience you remember long after the evening is over.
It’s the restaurant I might recommend when someone says:
“We’re celebrating something. Where should we go?”
This isn’t necessarily where you’re rushing through dinner before your next activity.

Fresco Cocina: Colorful, Social & Fun
Fresco Cocina brings a completely different energy to the list.
It’s lively, colorful, social, and exactly the kind of place I enjoy recommending when people want food and drinks in a fun Village atmosphere.
This is where I might send friends who want to relax over cocktails and Latin-inspired dishes rather than have a formal dining experience.
It’s also the kind of restaurant that fits naturally into a day of walking around Carlsbad Village.
Why I recommend it: Fun atmosphere, creative food and cocktails, and a central Village location.

Vigilucci’s: A Carlsbad Italian Tradition
Vigilucci’s Restaurant Group has been part of the Carlsbad dining scene for decades, bringing the warmth and hospitality of Italian dining to the community. Founded by Roberto Vigilucci, the family of restaurants has become known for classic Italian cuisine, fresh seafood, steaks, pasta, and welcoming service.
What I especially enjoy about Vigilucci’s is the combination of good food, beautiful settings, and a sense of occasion. Whether enjoying Italian favorites in Carlsbad Village or dining near the coast with an ocean view, it’s the kind of place that works equally well for a romantic dinner, visiting friends, or a family celebration.
For me, Vigilucci’s represents another important part of Carlsbad’s restaurant story—a locally rooted business that has grown alongside the community while continuing to make guests feel welcome at the table.
Miguel’s Cocina: Mexican Food with a View
Miguel’s Cocina is an easy recommendation when someone wants Mexican food paired with that unmistakable Southern California coastal feeling.
Mexican food is such an important part of the San Diego County dining experience, and sometimes visitors simply want chips, salsa, tacos, margaritas, and a relaxing meal.
That’s a pretty good vacation plan as far as I’m concerned.

Park 101: Casual Carlsbad at Its Best
Park 101 is where I send people who tell me:
“We don’t want anything fancy. We just want somewhere fun.”
This is relaxed Carlsbad.
It’s a great place for groups because everyone can settle in, eat, have a drink, and enjoy being together without worrying about making dinner an elaborate production.
It also captures something important about Carlsbad’s personality—we know how to do special-occasion dining, but we’re equally good at shorts, sunshine, friends, and something cold to drink.
Why I recommend it: Casual outdoor atmosphere, group-friendly setting, and a fun Carlsbad Village vibe.
Best for: Groups, families, casual afternoons, drinks with friends, and laid-back dining.
Casa de Bandini: Margaritas, Mariachi & a Celebration
Casa de Bandini is different from the Village restaurants on this list, but that’s part of why I include it.
Located in The Forum Carlsbad, Casa de Bandini is colorful, energetic, and festive.
This isn’t where I’d send someone looking for a quiet, intimate evening.
It’s where I’d send someone who wants dinner to feel like a celebration.
Mexican food, margaritas, colorful surroundings, and live entertainment can make the evening feel like an occasion even when there isn’t one.
Why I recommend it: Festive atmosphere, margaritas, Mexican favorites, and an experience that’s especially fun with family or friends.
Best for: Groups, families, birthdays, celebrations, and anyone looking for a lively evening.
If You Only Have One Night…
This is where things get difficult.
If someone asks me to name the single best restaurant in Carlsbad, I usually don’t think that’s the right question.
The better question is:
“What kind of Carlsbad experience do you want tonight?”
For a special culinary experience, I’d consider Jeune et Jolie or Lilo.
For creative food in a uniquely Carlsbad setting, Campfire.
For a polished Village dinner that appeals to almost everyone, Nick’s.
For Italian, Cicciotti’s.
For cocktails and a lively atmosphere, Fresco Cocina.
For something casual and fun, Park 101.
For Mexican food, margaritas, and an easygoing meal, Miguel’s Cocina.
And when the group wants dinner to feel like a party, Casa de Bandini.
That’s what makes Carlsbad dining so much fun.
There isn’t one answer.
Cherimarie’s Reflection: I Recommend Stories, Not Just Restaurants
Owning Carlsbad Food Tours has changed the way I think about restaurants.
Of course, the food matters.
But when I recommend somewhere to a friend or visitor, I’m also thinking about how that restaurant will make them feel.
Will they remember sitting together laughing over margaritas?
Will they celebrate an anniversary over an unforgettable meal?
Will they discover a chef doing something they didn’t expect to find in a beach town?
Will they meet someone who makes them feel welcome?
Will they walk outside afterward and realize the Pacific Ocean is only a few blocks away?
Those experiences become part of a vacation story.
And that’s why I love Carlsbad’s restaurant scene.
We have elegant dining and casual patios. French cuisine and Mexican favorites. Italian traditions and wood-fired cooking. Restaurants for anniversaries and places where you can show up after the beach.
There’s a seat at the table for everyone.
And when friends ask me where they should eat in Carlsbad, these are some of the places I find myself recommending again and again.
