Hugh & Florence Shipley Magee | The Couple Whose Generous Gift Preserved One of Carlsbad’s Most Treasured Historic Landmarks

The story of Hugh and Florence Shipley Magee is one of generosity, stewardship, and a deep appreciation for Carlsbad’s heritage. While the historic home now known as the Magee House was originally built by town founder Samuel Church Smith, it was Florence Shipley Magee’s remarkable decision to donate the property to the City of Carlsbad that ensured one of the city’s most important historic landmarks would be preserved forever.

Today, Magee Park stands as a living museum where visitors can step back in time and experience the history of early Carlsbad.

From the Shipley Family to the Magee Family

The history of Magee Park begins with the Shipley family.

In the 1890s, Alexander and Julia Shipley purchased the Victorian home that had been built in 1887 by Samuel Church Smith, one of the founders of the Carlsbad Land and Water Company. Seeking Carlsbad’s mild climate for Alexander’s health, the family relocated permanently and made the home their residence.

Their daughter, Florence Shipley, grew up in the house that would later become one of Carlsbad’s most treasured historic landmarks.

In 1912, Florence married Hugh Magee, a descendant of California’s historic Estudillo family. The couple moved to Hugh’s ranch, known as Condor’s Nest, in Pala, beginning a new chapter in their lives together.

Returning Home

Following the deaths of both her father and her husband, Florence returned to the family home in Carlsbad during the 1940s.

As the sole heir to the Shipley estate and having no children of her own, she became the caretaker of a home that represented an important chapter in Carlsbad’s early history.

Rather than allowing the property to be redeveloped or lost to time, Florence envisioned a different future.

A Gift That Preserved Carlsbad’s History

When Florence Shipley Magee passed away in 1974, she bequeathed the historic house and surrounding grounds to the City of Carlsbad to be used as a historic and recreational park. Her extraordinary gift created what is now Magee Park, ensuring that future generations could continue to experience one of Carlsbad’s earliest homes and its surrounding gardens.

That single act of generosity became one of the most significant historic preservation gifts in Carlsbad’s history.

The Heart of Historic Carlsbad

Today, Magee Park is one of Carlsbad’s most cherished historic destinations.

The park includes:

  • Magee House, home of the Carlsbad Historical Society
  • Heritage Hall, Carlsbad’s original City Hall and Police Department
  • The Shipley-Magee Barn
  • The historic Granary
  • Beautiful rose gardens and heritage gardens
  • Open green spaces used for community gatherings and weddings

Together, these buildings tell the story of Carlsbad’s transformation from a small seaside settlement into the thriving coastal community it is today.

A Legacy of Preservation

It survives because someone cared enough to protect it.

Florence Shipley Magee made a decision that continues to benefit our community more than fifty years later. Thanks to her generosity, visitors can walk through one of Carlsbad’s oldest homes, explore beautiful gardens, and connect with the stories of the people who helped shape our city.

It’s one of the greatest gifts any family has ever given Carlsbad.
