Costa Azul Winery A Relaxed Wine Experience in the Heart of Carlsbad Village

People seated at tables in a brewery with barrels on the wall.

“The best wine experiences aren’t about knowing everything about wine. They’re about slowing down, sharing a glass, and enjoying the people around you.”

Carlsbad Village has always been a place where people gather.

Visitors come for the beaches.

Locals meet friends for dinner.

Couples stroll through the Village.

Families celebrate special occasions.

And increasingly, visitors are discovering another side of Carlsbad’s culinary community—its growing craft beverage and wine scene.

Costa Azul Winery adds its own chapter to that story.

Located in Carlsbad Village, Costa Azul offers guests a relaxed and approachable place to enjoy wine without the formality sometimes associated with traditional wine tasting.

It’s the kind of place where you can walk in knowing very little about wine and leave having discovered a new favorite.

For Carlsbad Food Tours, Costa Azul Winery is also an important partner in our wine experiences, helping us introduce guests to the social, welcoming side of wine tasting in the heart of our coastal community.

Meet the Owner & Winemaker

Christopher Van Alyea: Bringing the Winery Experience to the Coast

Behind Costa Azul Winery is Christopher Van Alyea, an experienced winemaker and restaurateur whose work has helped bring locally produced wine and approachable wine experiences to North County San Diego.

Christopher is the founder and owner of Solterra Winery & Kitchen in Leucadia, where the combination of winemaking, food, and hospitality created a destination for guests interested in experiencing wine in a relaxed coastal setting.

With Costa Azul Winery, Christopher brought that same philosophy to Carlsbad Village.

Costa Azul serves as a casual, beachside tasting room and production extension of the larger Solterra wine program, allowing visitors to experience locally crafted wines in the heart of Carlsbad’s walkable coastal community.

The concept is a natural fit for Carlsbad.

Guests can spend the day at the beach, explore the Village, enjoy local restaurants, and then relax over a glass of wine—all without leaving the neighborhood.

From Solterra to Costa Azul

Expanding a North County Wine Story

Costa Azul Winery

Christopher Van Alyea’s connection to wine extends beyond the tasting room.

As a winemaker, he understands that every bottle begins with agriculture.

The vineyard.

The grape harvest.

The decisions made during fermentation.

The barrels selected for aging.

The blending process.

And finally, the moment when the wine is shared with guests.

At Solterra Winery & Kitchen, Christopher built a business that brings winemaking, food, and hospitality together.

Costa Azul represents the next chapter in that story.

Rather than duplicating the Solterra experience, Costa Azul offers something more casual and distinctly Carlsbad—a relaxed coastal tasting room where visitors can discover wine while enjoying the easygoing atmosphere of the Village.

Together, the two businesses connect the communities of Leucadia and Carlsbad through a shared appreciation for wine, food, and coastal hospitality.

The Winemaker’s Philosophy

Making Wine Approachable

One of the most important qualities of a neighborhood tasting room is its ability to make people feel comfortable.

Wine can sometimes seem complicated.

Varietals.

Vintages.

Regions.

Fermentation.

Barrel aging.

Tasting notes.

But at its heart, wine is meant to be shared.

Christopher’s approach helps make the experience approachable. Guests don’t need extensive wine knowledge to enjoy Costa Azul.

They can ask questions.

Taste something new.

Learn about the winemaking process.

Share a bottle with friends.

And simply enjoy being together.

That philosophy aligns beautifully with the experience we want to create through Carlsbad Food Tours.

Why We Love Them

One of the things I appreciate most about Costa Azul Winery is the connection between the person making the wine and the experience our guests have in the tasting room.

Christopher Van Alyea isn’t simply operating another wine bar.

He’s a winemaker who has spent years building businesses around wine, food, and hospitality.

Costa Azul gives our guests the opportunity to experience that story in a relaxed Carlsbad setting.

When we visit, guests can learn about the wine, discover Christopher’s connection to Solterra Winery & Kitchen, and experience another example of the entrepreneurs and culinary professionals shaping North County’s food and beverage community.

It’s exactly the kind of story I love sharing on our tours.

The Meaning of Costa Azul

Inspired by the Blue Coast

The name Costa Azul translates from Spanish as “Blue Coast.”

It’s a fitting name for a winery located in a community where the Pacific Ocean shapes so much of everyday life.

The ocean influences Carlsbad’s lifestyle.

Its weather.

Its restaurants.

Its recreation.

Its tourism.

And the relaxed pace visitors experience when they arrive.

Costa Azul Winery reflects that same coastal spirit—a place designed for conversation, connection, and enjoying the moment.

Behind the Scenes

From Vineyard to Glass

Every bottle of wine tells an agricultural story.

Long before the bottle reaches the tasting room, grapes must be planted, cultivated, harvested, crushed, fermented, aged, and bottled.

Farmers.

Harvest crews.

Winemakers.

Cellar teams.

Hospitality professionals.

Each plays a role in bringing wine to the table.

Sharing those stories helps guests understand that wine is more than a beverage.

It’s agriculture.

Craftsmanship.

Patience.

And tradition.

Wine, Tourism & Carlsbad Village

Businesses like Costa Azul Winery contribute to the growing culinary identity of Carlsbad Village.

Visitors today are looking for experiences.

They want to meet local business owners.

Discover independent restaurants.

Taste regional food and beverages.

Hear stories.

And feel connected to the places they visit.

Costa Azul gives visitors another reason to slow down and spend time in the Village.

And when visitors stay longer, explore more businesses, and share their experiences with others, the entire community benefits.

If These Tables Could Talk…

“I’ve welcomed couples celebrating anniversaries, friends beginning a night in Carlsbad Village, visitors discovering a new favorite wine, and strangers who arrived separately but ended the evening sharing stories. The bottles change, but the reason people gather remains the same.”

Cherimarie’s Reflection

One of my favorite things about a wine experience is watching people relax.

At the beginning, guests may not know one another.

Then the wine is poured.

Someone asks a question.

Another person shares a story.

People begin laughing.

And suddenly, a group of strangers starts feeling like a group of friends.

That’s why places like Costa Azul Winery are such a natural fit for Carlsbad Food Tours.

Wine creates conversation.

Conversation creates connection.

And connection is at the heart of every experience we create.

Then & Now

Then

For generations, enjoying California wine often meant traveling to the state’s vineyard regions and visiting wineries surrounded by agricultural land.

Now

Urban and coastal tasting rooms allow visitors to experience wine culture in walkable communities like Carlsbad Village.

Costa Azul Winery is part of that evolution, offering visitors a relaxed wine experience just minutes from the Pacific Ocean.

A Seat at the Table

If you could share a bottle of wine overlooking California’s blue coast with anyone—past or present—who would you invite, and what stories would you hope to share?

Some of life’s best conversations happen when we give ourselves permission to slow down.

Our Legacy

Costa Azul Winery represents another chapter in Carlsbad Village’s evolving culinary story.

It demonstrates how wine can become part of the larger experience of discovering a community.

Visitors come to taste wine.

But they also walk the Village.

Discover restaurants.

Meet local business owners.

Learn about Carlsbad.

And create memories.

Through approachable hospitality and the simple tradition of gathering around a shared bottle, Costa Azul Winery helps visitors experience the welcoming spirit that makes Carlsbad special.

Because the best wine experiences aren’t only about what’s poured into the glass.

They’re about the people sitting around the table.
