GONZO! Ramen
Japanese comfort food, family hospitality, and rock-and-roll energy
Meet the Family
GONZO! Ramen was founded by Mika and Jamison Murphy.
Mika brought recipes, memories, and flavors from Japan, while the couple’s shared interest in ramen and music helped create the restaurant’s distinctive personality. Their sons—Justin, Jake, and Jeff—have also participated in the family business.
The Murphys opened GONZO! in Carlsbad Village in March 2020, just as pandemic restrictions began reshaping restaurant operations. The family persevered, and the restaurant developed a loyal following. Visit Carlsbad
Japanese Comfort Food in the Village
GONZO! centers its menu on ramen and Japanese comfort food. Carefully prepared broth, noodles, vegetables, proteins, and traditional accompaniments come together in bowls designed to be satisfying and approachable.
At night, the restaurant takes inspiration from the lively, social atmosphere of a Japanese izakaya.
More Than a Ramen Shop
Music, colorful artwork, Japanese cultural references, and the Murphy family’s enthusiasm give GONZO! an identity unlike any other restaurant in the Village.
Its rock-and-roll events demonstrate the owners’ belief that a restaurant can be both a place to eat and a place where community and creativity meet.
Why It Matters
GONZO! adds an authentic family story and a Japanese culinary perspective to Carlsbad’s dining landscape. It shows how migration, personal memories, resilience, and hospitality can be expressed through one comforting bowl of ramen.
