Jason Markow’s “Love Is Written in the Water”

A Hidden Message Along Carlsbad’s Coast

As you explore Carlsbad Village, you’ll discover that art isn’t confined to galleries—it surrounds you. Murals, sculptures, and public installations help tell the story of our community while inviting visitors to slow down, look closer, and see Carlsbad through a different lens.

One of the most meaningful public art installations is “Love Is Written in the Water,” created by artist Jason Markow. At first glance, the artwork captures the beauty and movement of the Pacific Ocean. But hidden within the flowing water is a powerful message waiting to be discovered.

Written diagonally within the waves are the words:

“Although you need technology, you also need to nurture other things in your life… Love, compassion, gratitude.”

It is a reminder that while technology connects us to the world, the qualities that truly enrich our lives are the human values we choose to cultivate every day.

A Message for Modern Life

In today’s fast-paced world, we spend countless hours looking at screens, checking notifications, and staying connected digitally. Jason Markow’s artwork gently encourages us to pause and reconnect with something deeper.

The ocean has always symbolized renewal, reflection, and balance. By placing this thoughtful message within the flowing water, Markow invites viewers to remember that life’s greatest treasures cannot be measured by technology alone.

Love.

Compassion.

Gratitude.

These simple words are easy to overlook, much like the hidden message itself. But once you discover them, they become impossible to forget.

Art That Rewards Curiosity

One of the reasons this installation is so memorable is that it asks viewers to slow down.

Many people walk past without noticing the hidden words.

Others stop, study the artwork, and suddenly see the message emerge from the water.

It’s a wonderful reminder that some of life’s greatest discoveries require us to pay attention.

Just as our food tours encourage guests to look beyond the surface of Carlsbad, this artwork reminds us that every place—and every person—has a deeper story waiting to be discovered.

Jason Markow’s Artistic Vision

Jason Markow is known for creating artwork that blends nature, movement, and thoughtful storytelling. His pieces often encourage viewers to engage with the artwork rather than simply observe it.

“Love Is Written in the Water” perfectly reflects Carlsbad’s coastal spirit while reminding us that kindness, gratitude, and compassion are timeless values that connect us all.

It’s more than public art.

It’s an invitation to reflect on what truly matters.

Experience Carlsbad Through Art

Public art is one of the many hidden gems that make Carlsbad Village such a unique destination. Throughout the Village you’ll find colorful murals, sculptures, and installations that celebrate our community’s creativity, history, and coastal lifestyle.

On a Carlsbad Food Tour, we love sharing stories like this because they reveal another side of Carlsbad that many visitors would otherwise miss. Art has the power to spark conversation, inspire curiosity, and deepen our connection to the places we visit.

When you take the time to notice the details, you’ll discover that Carlsbad is filled with stories—some told through history, others through food, and some, like Jason Markow’s artwork, quietly written in the water.

Cheri’s Reflection

One of my favorite things about leading tours is watching guests notice something they might have walked right past. Jason Markow’s artwork is a perfect example. At first, it’s simply a beautiful depiction of water. But when you slow down and discover the hidden words, it becomes something much more meaningful.

I think that’s a lot like Carlsbad itself. The more time you spend here, the more stories you uncover. Whether it’s a piece of public art, a historic building, or a family-owned restaurant, every discovery adds another layer to this wonderful coastal community. That’s why I love sharing Carlsbad—because its greatest treasures are often hidden in plain sight.
