The History of the Los Diego Hotel
In 1925, local businessman Roy Chase built the Los Diego Hotel to encourage travel and commerce between Los Angeles and San Diego—hence the name “Los Diego.”
Located on State Street in the heart of Carlsbad Village, the hotel welcomed travelers making their way along California’s coastal highway. During the 1920s, State Street served as the primary route connecting Southern California’s growing coastal communities.
However, by the early 1930s, the construction of Carlsbad Boulevard (Historic Highway 101) shifted traffic away from State Street. As automobile travel patterns changed, demand for hotel accommodations declined, and the building eventually transitioned to other commercial uses.
Over the years, the historic structure has housed a variety of businesses and restaurants, continuing its role as an important gathering place within Carlsbad Village.
