Napatini Bistro & Wine Bar

“You do not need to be a wine expert to discover a wine you love.”

Meet the Owners and Chef

Napatini is owned and operated by husband-and-wife team Lynn and Gary McLean. Lynn is a Navy veteran who later worked in computer and IT-services sales. Gary is a retired Marine Corps infantry officer who spent roughly 25 years in IT consulting after active duty. The couple moved from the San Francisco Bay Area to North San Diego County in 2019, bringing with them years of visits to California wine country. The kitchen has been led by head chef Joshua Mendoza.

The Story Behind the Dream

The McLeans wanted to recreate the pleasure of wine-country discovery without the travel or intimidation. Their idea was a neighborhood space where guests could taste broadly, compare wines at their own pace, enjoy food, and ask questions comfortably.

The Restaurant Story

Napatini combines a bistro atmosphere with an interactive wine wall offering a large rotating selection by the taste, half glass, or glass. The system turns wine education into a personal journey: guests can compare grapes, regions, and styles while deciding how much to pour.

Signature Offerings

The wine wall is the defining experience, supported by a curated bottle list, small plates, and bistro dishes. Since selections and menus rotate, guides should focus on the discovery format and confirm featured wines or food with the team before a tour.

Behind the Scenes

The McLeans’ service backgrounds show in the restaurant’s organization, attention to guests, and desire to make information useful. Chef Mendoza’s kitchen provides the food foundation that allows the wine program to become a complete evening rather than a tasting alone.

Why We Love Them

Napatini makes wine exploration interactive and friendly. It is especially valuable for groups because each guest can follow a different curiosity while remaining part of the same shared experience.

Cherimarie’s Reflection

Napatini reminds me that hospitality is often the art of removing pressure. When guests feel free to ask, taste, compare, and learn, wine becomes less mysterious and much more fun.
