When the World’s Best Golfers Battled Head-to-Head in Carlsbad

For decades, La Costa Resort & Spa wasn’t just one of America’s finest golf resorts—it was one of the most prestigious stages in professional golf.

From 1999 through 2006, Carlsbad hosted the World Golf Championships (WGC) Match Play Championship, one of the sport’s most exclusive tournaments. Only the top 64 golfers in the Official World Golf Ranking earned invitations to compete in a dramatic single-elimination format where every match meant survival.

Unlike traditional stroke-play tournaments, the Match Play Championship featured golfer against golfer, creating unforgettable moments, dramatic upsets, and intense rivalries. For one exciting week each February, Carlsbad became the center of the golf world.

In 1999, the PGA Tour, European Tour, and other international golf organizations introduced the World Golf Championships (WGC) to bring together the world’s best players in a series of elite events.
