Culinary Arts Students Experience the Real World of Hospitality on a Carlsbad Food Tour

Culinary Arts Food Tour in Carlsbad
Recently, Culinary Arts Instructor Tammy Bakewell from Hemet High School brought her students to Carlsbad for a unique hands-on learning experience with Carlsbad Food Tours. Instead of learning solely from textbooks and classroom demonstrations, students had the opportunity to explore the real-world culinary industry while tasting their way through the vibrant restaurant scene of Carlsbad Village.

The private group food tour included six tasting locations featuring a variety of savory dishes and desserts while showcasing the diverse flavors, cultures, and career opportunities that make the hospitality industry so exciting.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

For aspiring chefs and hospitality professionals, there is no substitute for experiencing a working restaurant firsthand. A culinary food tour allows students to see how different restaurants operate, observe various service styles, and gain a better understanding of the many career paths available within the food industry.

Throughout the tour, students learned that a successful restaurant requires much more than talented chefs. They discovered the wide variety of roles that help create memorable dining experiences, including:

  • Executive Chefs and Sous Chefs
  • Pastry Chefs and Bakers
  • Restaurant Owners and Entrepreneurs
  • General Managers
  • Front-of-House Managers
  • Servers and Bartenders
  • Food Tour Guides
  • Event Coordinators
  • Marketing and Social Media Specialists
  • Food Photographers and Content Creators
  • Hospitality and Tourism Professionals

Many students are surprised to learn that the culinary world offers opportunities far beyond cooking, making it an exciting field for individuals with a wide range of talents and interests.

Exploring the Diverse Flavors of Carlsbad

One of the highlights of the tour was introducing students to the incredible diversity of cuisines available in Carlsbad. As one of Southern California’s emerging foodie destinations, Carlsbad Village offers an impressive range of culinary experiences from around the world.

Students sampled dishes representing several cultures, including:

  • Mediterranean cuisine featuring Turkish-inspired flavors
  • Authentic Italian dishes and artisan gelato
  • French-inspired savory and sweet crepes
  • Traditional Mexican tacos
  • Freshly made gourmet donuts

Along the way, our guides shared stories about the restaurant owners, chefs, culinary traditions, and ingredients behind each dish. Students gained a deeper appreciation for how culture, history, and creativity influence the food we eat every day.

Understanding the Business of Restaurants

In addition to tasting great food, students learned valuable lessons about restaurant operations and entrepreneurship. Discussions included topics such as:

  • How restaurants develop their concepts and menus
  • The importance of customer service and hospitality
  • Food sourcing and local ingredients
  • Marketing and branding strategies
  • Restaurant design and atmosphere
  • The challenges and rewards of owning a food business

These real-world insights help bridge the gap between classroom learning and future careers in the hospitality industry.

Discovering Carlsbad’s History and Culture

The educational experience extended beyond the restaurants themselves. While walking through Carlsbad Village, students learned about the city’s history, architecture, public art, and tourism industry. Understanding the community and culture surrounding a restaurant is an important part of creating successful dining experiences and building strong connections with guests.

Inspiring the Next Generation

We love seeing educators like Tammy Bakewell think outside the box and create meaningful learning opportunities for their students. Food tours provide a fun, engaging way for culinary students to explore potential career paths while gaining valuable industry knowledge in a real-world setting.

Ms. Bakewell’s dedication to her students is evident in everything she does. She was recently recognized by the nonprofit organization Honored, whose mission is to celebrate exceptional educators and support their important work in the classroom.

As Ms. Bakewell wisely tells her students:

“Once you learn to cook, it’s a skill that no one can ever take away from you. It’s the gift that keeps giving.”

We couldn’t agree more.
