Why Is Carlsbad Named Carlsbad?

Discover the fascinating story behind the coastal village’s famous name.

When most people think of Carlsbad, California, they picture beautiful beaches, charming shops, incredible restaurants, and a relaxed coastal lifestyle. Few realize that the city’s name originated thousands of miles away in Europe—and that it all began with the discovery of a remarkable alkaline artesian mineral spring.

The story behind Carlsbad’s name is one of the most fascinating chapters in Southern California history, and it’s one we love sharing with guests on our Taste of Carlsbad Food Tour.

Captain John Frazier: The Man Who Changed Carlsbad Forever

The story begins in the 1880s with Captain John Frazier, a former sea captain who settled in what is now Carlsbad Village.

After digging a well on his property, Captain Frazier discovered an artesian spring with naturally mineral-rich alkaline water. After drinking the water, he found relief from a chronic stomach ailment he had suffered from for years. Curious about its unusual properties, he sent samples to independent laboratories in New York and Chicago for analysis.

The results would forever change the future of the town.

The Discovery of Carlsbad’s Famous Mineral Water

Laboratory testing revealed that the water was chemically similar to the famous therapeutic springs of Karlsbad, Bohemia, one of Europe’s most celebrated spa destinations.

Today, Karlsbad is known as Karlovy Vary in the Czech Republic and continues to attract visitors from around the world seeking its famous mineral waters.

Inspired by this remarkable discovery, Captain Frazier and local investors envisioned creating an American spa destination on California’s coast.

The Carlsbad Land & Mineral Water Company

Recognizing the opportunity, Captain Frazier partnered with local businessmen to establish the Carlsbad Land & Mineral Water Company.

The company bottled and sold American Carlsbad Mineral Water across the country while promoting Carlsbad as a health resort destination. A grand Victorian hotel was built beside the artesian well, attracting visitors who came to drink and bathe in the healing waters, just as they did in the famous European spa.

The mineral spring quickly transformed what had been known as Frazier’s Station into a thriving seaside community.

How the Mineral Well Helped Build a City

Carlsbad’s mineral water became its greatest attraction.

Hotels, businesses, homes, and eventually an entire village grew around the famous artesian well.

Although California’s land boom eventually ended and the well was abandoned during the Great Depression, the city’s identity had already been established.

Today, the restored artesian well remains one of Carlsbad’s most important historic landmarks.
