Happy World Food Travel Day 2022

Today is World Food Travel Day 2022 and I am going to share a foodie story from a past trip to Florence Italy. The story goes like this: One evening Brad my husband and I were out to dinner in Encinitas at a local Italian restaurant. While waiting for our food we were discussing our upcoming trip to Italy. The owner of the restaurant overheard us talking about Florence and he said, “Are you going to Florence?” and we said yes of course. Pio was his name. He then said that he had been a chef in Florence for years and has friends still there. Then he asked us if we could give them some notes while we were there. So, we said sure, why not. We took his notes with us to deliver to his friends. The first night…

The Wonderful World of Food Tours – A Diary of My Food Tour Travels

Posted July 27, 2016 | By Kristl Story FOOD TOURS My Food Tour Travel Diary My love of food and travel has taken me on 23 food tours, and I’m sharing a little nibble of each one to give you a glimpse inside the wonderful world of food tours. Come along, there’s delicious food to discover and local stories to be told. 1. Austin, Texas: Rocket Bikes Food Tour gets the honor of being my first food tour and my only bicycle food tour. I’d visited Austin many times, and I thought I knew everything about Austin…the good places to eat, the history and the weirdness. After our first stop, I realized that I only knew the touristy parts of Austin. We quickly (thanks to the electric bikes) got off the beaten path and into the East Austin neighborhood for…

The Best Way to Experience a Destination is Through a Food Tour

Food tours are my favorite way to experience a destination. Whenever we are going somewhere new the first thing I look for is a food tour. This is also how we came up with the idea to start our own food tour in Marrakech. If you have never taken one, I highly recommend it! They are popping up all over the world and can be very broadly focused (ex: the best of Rome) or narrowly focused (ex: Chocolate of Brussels). Really you might be very surprised what you find! I’ve been on many tours in several countries and after running our own tour for almost a year there are a few things I’ve taken away as keys to having a great food tour; 8 Components of a Great Food Tour The food should be items you couldn’t find on your own…

What is Truffle Oil? A Mushroom Olive Oil

A truffle is a fungus that looks similar to a mushroom but it grows underground particular trees. Truffle oil is made from infusing olive oils with these truffles.  There are different types of truffle oils: French truffle oil, black truffle oil, and white truffle.  Truffle oils can be used on pasta or salads to enrich the flavors.  The Italian population often uses truffles in their cooking. Truffles can be a little expensive and can sell for as much as $30.00 USD an ounce. Truffle oil is a modern culinary ingredient used to impart the flavor and aroma of truffles to a…
